Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Debating on putting more olive eggers in my incubator after this* hatch. But not sure if I should wait a few weeks or clean and repeat šŸ˜‚

okay so I know that after one or two generations it’s best not to breed them or you could run into genetic defects. My question is, does the same rule apply if say,
Rooster (a) + Hen (a) = Hen (b)
Rooster (a) + Hen (b) = Hen (c)
Rooster (a) + Hen (c) = Hen (d)

hope that makes sense. With that scenario, should I stop after producing Hen (c) or Hen (d)?

I am not an expert by any means but I’ve been doing a lot of research about this myself, as I’m diving into breeding. I guess my main question would be - Are Hen A and Rooster A related?

Line breeding is breeding within a family line. Cousins aunts uncles etc etc. Inbreeding is breeding mother to son. Brother and sister and so on.

You can inbreed once and then go for an outcross or somewhere else in the line (but far enough away ie to an aunt or cousin.)

You can linebreed for longer as the idea is that you bring in new blood along the way through outcrossing.

The more you inbreed or linebreed the more you fix in both positive and negative traits.

It's a good idea to draw up a plan and map your breeding. hth

I did it! I picked up 11 BBS Marans and 12 Silkie eggs today and put them in my other Nurture Right 360. The 1 overflow Silkie egg went in with the Olive Eggers in my first Nurture Right until I check them all for fertility, then I'll move it back...unless they're all fertilized then I'll figure something else out, lol!

I'll also be getting 2 dozen Ameraucana eggs on Wednesday and the additional goose eggs from my friend...So 10 slots left in a Nurture Right, 7 slots in the Brinsea Mini, maybe squeeze some into the IncuView with the goose eggs...LOL! Don't do the math, just don't. :lau

Oh I also confirmed fertility in all 4 Sebastopol eggs last night!! :celebrate

Beautiful eggs. Do you have a pond for the geese? I want geese but I'm not sure they'd be happy in a kiddy pool like the ducks.

When I went to town, I got eggs from a neighbor farm for 6 bucks, I hatched theirs last year. 16/20 the white eggs are spitz-y mixes (3) 2 little ones-missing is a little one with a crack it is nail poilished. 2 really blue eggs, and a med. brown and a big tan. 3 bright bright green (you cannot tell by the pic, but almost a kelly.) They have 3 roosters at least one is EE , and I don't know how many chicks. but a bunch.

I will not have room in my incubator for these, but they will go in my homemade one since it is doing a good job caring for the ones in there now. They will be 3/4 days behind.

Sebastopol geese do fine with baby pools, that's all the breeder had when I met her geese while picking up the eggs. I just enjoy hatching them though, I can't keep geese yet because I live in a neighborhood, but one day! My preference would be to have a pond just so I can manage the ecosystem to keep things clean better, rather than cleaning a kiddie pool 2-3 times a day. lol

To be completely honest I don’t know. I would think they are or at least I will breed them with the idea that they are that way I don’t do it for x amount of generations. I will do more research before attempting of course. I got them back in March 2019 from TSC.

Thank you everyone for the input. I will go and finish the video to see if I get some insight
