Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

I forgot to say... I HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP!!!! I've never been so excited to see a chick until these polish sebright crosses
I have always had large chickens. I have 3 eggs that are from a Sebright hen and one egg from a Leghorn hen, the Roo is a booted, bearded, Mille Fleur Bantam. I don't know what to expect, but I'm excited to see what they look like, lol.

My very hazy understanding is that chicken genetics are not quite like mammalian genetics, and they can generally tolerate more back crossing than mammals. But I am still very much learning and could be misunderstanding something 😬🤔.

Yep my also hazy understanding is that you’re right. I think I’m just still getting comfortable with the idea. 🤣 Luckily I have a while to figure it out since none of my breeding stock is related this year.

Sorry for the radio silence after my last panicked post! My sweet and very supportive husband being a true son of Ireland remembered a cousin who used to hatch chickens and he gave her a call. As she is 80, I ran the town over and picked her up and brought her back to advise me of the best course of action. Electrolytes given before I hit the road and the chick was already looking a bit better when I returned with the cousin in tow. Her assessment is that the blood loss was minor but the little guy has curled feet and spraddle legs from 'being in the shell too long'???? Anyhow, we taped the feet and put a rubber band contraption on his legs and put him back in the incubator to get some rest. Not doomed but certainly not out of the woods. She never candled her eggs so had no advice on the last two so tomorrow if I do not wake to pips or zips we will call this hatch.

There is something just icky about it lol but they don't seem to care one way or the other do they?
