Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

I left this thread for a few hours and had so many pages to catch up on! @BluebirdHomestead best of luck with the little guy! I have no experience with that so I’m not much help.

In other news... my Araucana and Maran breeder friend offered me some eggs... I have a few spots left in the bator.... Hmmm......

Do it! :yesss:

I think my chick has a slipped tendon too. Because it’s out of place. I’ll look at that article too.

It’s chirping away. My brooder and the rest of the chicks went outside. This one is staying in the incubator. I hold it a lot and talk to it so it’s not lonely. I took a nap with it on my neck and it kept chirping the entire nap. Was/is it cold or is it lonely?

Just like a baby that cries for everything it needs, chicks peep. It could be a number of things, discomfort, cold, lonely. I hope your little one pulls through as well!

Just read this from the article posted here 😢 does that mean my chick’s peeping is crying out in pain?

  • The chick may exhibit signs of pain, especially in the first few days after injury. Listen for repeated peeping or crying.

It's possible. :hugs Not a death sentence though. We get hurt and whine about it too. Hopefully it's something you can fix easily for the little one.

We checked the last egg. Its driving me nuts. Oh my, it was chirping in the shell. There isn't any apparent pipping. The person I bought the silkie eggs from said to leave it be until day 23. What is your consensus?

So...I'm that person that once I get to the last eggs I poke around in there to see if the chick needs help. Hands off is fine too but if all of the other chicks are finished hatching and you have one straggler then I would suspect something isn't right. I just hatched Silkies last month and all hatched perfectly fine but one that I'm pretty sure got stuck because of it's huge vaulted skull.

If it was malpositioned and you poke a hole in the air cell but see blood, do you automatically stop and go back later? (On a late egg)

A gentle approach to give you more time to decide what to do would be to put a small safety hole in the top of the air cell. I would candle, mark the air cell and then sterilize a screw with rubbing alcohol before carefully scoring in the center of the air cell to make a small hole. Just keep in mind that the chick is usually a lot closer to the shell then it appears to be when candling to poke carefully if you decide to do this.

You shouldn't see any blood when just making a safety hole. A safety hole is only through the shell and exterior membrane. The interior membrane is the one with all of the blood vessel, but yes when you see blood you would apply gentle pressure with a q-tip or paper towel and definitely don't want to move forward until the chick finishes absorbing all of the blood in the vessels.
