Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Last year I got like 6-8 "pullets" from the bargain bin at TSC. At our store that's usually the 2+ week olds they clearance out at Rock bottom prices. I think I paid $0.25 a chick. Anyways they were sex linked birds so I thought I got an amazing deal. First time buying birds from TSC.

What I have since learned is for red based sex linked birds the females are the red/darker ones and make are the white/yellow chicks. Our TSC must have gotten a wrong order, from Jenks hatchery, because every single bird was a rooster!:lau
I just peed 😂😂😂😂

I'm going to tractor supply tonight because I need to go get some dewormer. I might be able to sneak six chicks since my husband feels so bad about my rooster. He hasn't passed away yet and he is a little bit better, but he's still not out of the woods yet.

Maybe I can somehow convince him that I need six bantams 😁 wish me luck and hope the chick bins have chicks when I go in!

My bantam RIR is the sweetest roo that I have! He got attacked by something last night though. One of the dogs is the one who found him out in the woods, covered in mud and shaking like a leaf. If he wasn’t shaking I would’ve thought he was dead - he was cold to the touch. Bathed him and wrapped him in a towel and let him chill in a dark kennel. No injuries so fingers crossed that he gets through the shock easily.

lol! Everyone I know that has purchased chicks at a feed store has at least one story. They're constantly mixing things up! My very first chicks were two lovely little Buff Orpington chicks from the feed store. They grew out to be two very nice...White Leghorns. lol :lau

Oh no! I hope he pulls through! Sounds like shock. This happened to a chick I was raising that got carried away by a hawk and dropped from a tall tree, I watched the whole thing happen. I looked for hours and couldn't find the body so I started to give up. Wouldn't you know that little dude came running toward me from the woods and stopped right in front of me before he gave in to the shock. Little trooper pulled through!

A warm, dark space, in the house preferably, is exactly what he needs. I put food and water with mine. Once he started to snap out of it he started drinking first. If your rooster can make it through the shock he may be ok. Fingers crossed for your roo!!

I'm not sure if this will give you a bit of hope for your rooster but this is the thread on my Marans chick last year. He snapped back very quickly considering his ordeal.

I have hope for him for sure - late last year I dealt with a guinea who had lost a wing to a raccoon. His shock was horrible and he was in and out of it for over a week. Now he’s back out in the guinea run and free ranging like a normal bird! He even has a little clique of hens that adore him. 😂

Edited to remove an accidental quote. Sorry!

Wow! That's incredible!

I was really surprised that he made it. A few times I thought we’d have to bring him in for euthanasia because of signs of infection. Didn’t end up having to have a vet intervene, though. He has part of the wing bone still hanging on and it’s grown skin over it. He’s fluffy on the side without the wing, though, so you can hardly even tell.

I know how it feels...

I'll cry with you if you want 😭

We are heading to tractor supply soon. Hoping the bantam bin is full because I promised my roo that's sick that when he gets better he will have bantams just like him. Told him he can't die yet till he has a HeiHei Army. I think Squatch manned up to him and the results aren't good. I don't blame Squatch, he's just doing what roosters do. Needless to say... HeiHei will have his own area with his own kind (bantams) I'll never mix bantams and standard chickens ever again 😭

Do you have antibiotics on hand for infection?
