No that is not the best method to tell early on what sex a bird is. That is how to tell when they are adults.
If you know anything about E-locus colors, you will be able to tell by the breast feathers in some breeds. Duckwing and Wheaten will have black breast if male, light breast if female. Red birds will have brownish hens, and any "red" will be closer to gold, but in the male, the red will be red.
The best way to tell is learn all the keys to look for, and raise a lot of chicks, or at least watch a lot of chicks grow up.
