to hatch in egg carton or not??

Hmmm... do you mean when you rotate the eggs before lockdown?

The eggs should be resting horizontal in this stage. With the eggs marked with an X and an O on the sides of the eggs.

If you're wondering because of the O's on my eggs - Those O's I just put on them to mark that they're developed and fertile - The nonmarked ones were culled before lockdown.

As for marking chicks, I lure the chicks to being right below the ventplug, then I take a skinny marker, slip it in there, mark em, and I'm done.

Go for it. I was very skeptical at first, as was family members, but it worked great. I will do it everytime.

yes, before lock down. I was thinking they would be sort of on their sides. but could not picture in my head how to turn them in the cartons.
Thanks to you all. If the temp stays steady tonight, I will be setting them in the morning. I am very excited about it, and wanted to make sure I got it all right.

Freebie you do not turn the eggs in the carton if you are using them to hatch only in lockdown your not suppose to open the incubator for 3 days....if you have to for a quick emergency some will get bathroom nice and steamy and do what ever real quick or some spray eggs with warmer water so if their are eggs piping they don't dry out when you open it humidity will go down really really fast....some people hatch in bigger paper cups or boats like you get some fast food in you can buy at Costco...it does help on stabilizing the eggs and save on clean up...you can mark chicks once out with rubber bands on legs but make sure really loose and change sizes as needed as they get older....also I just had a chick about 2 weeks ago pipping about 1/3 of the way and it was face down and died in shell never got out and the other chick that hatched I am sure rolled it well I know it did and everything else in there this was my first hatch......I did not realize what happened till your post here so thank you some where thinking had to do with humidity but I am not so sure cause the first one was fine and as I think about it killed its brother or sister.......that side that was pipped was all dried out and the chick was stuck to it.....so if no chicks where moving stuff around I am sure it would of hatched right and lived pipping on that same side but left facing up

I am gonna use something different in lockdown this next time....my only turkey is pipping today when got home it is due sunday to hatch. I am so excited....I threw every thing out but the one chick that hatched 2 weeks ago and this one turkey egg....I kept it cause when candled it was totally black but the air sac and it is hatching I really did not think it would.

I am wondering how the chicks know which side to pip anyways how do they know the side they start pipping is not the side facing down in the first place gravity?

Actually that sometimes is a problem. . . I've never had a pip directly down to the surface, but I've had a pip pretty close. They eventually just zip upwards and pop out. - Another reason why I now use cartons.

Does the egg carton affect the temperature inside the incubator and causing you to have to regulate it again? This is an interesting idea, because I amused the chicks needed to move around , roll, to get pipped out. Also for the person who just used the egg carton before having a turner, did you just turn the whole egg carton over having left the lid on? Or had you removed lid and just turned each egg over by hand?

Thanks so much for clearing that up. I finally have the incubator temp nice and stable. and will be setting the eggs today. They will be on the wire till day 18, then I will put them in the cartons. I am so pumped for this adventure. I have only let broody's hatch chicks, so this should be very interesting.

I am getting ready to set guinea eggs today....I think, i will try some in the carton for lock down and see how i get along? I did 2 hatches last summer with 100 5 hatch both times! I had 2 I had to help pip out, however and they lived. I never open the lip after lock down and I put a wet sponge in the incubator from the start. I never take them out until all are hatched and dry. You can leave the keats in the incubator for 12 to 24 hrs after hatching. I felt, this helped with sratpple-leg (spelled all wrong
