To heck w/ chickens...

UGH! Don't do this to me people! Now I want ducks! LOL So tell me, do you keep them in a coop too? Do their eggs taste the same as chickens? And do they go in to roost the same as chickens. I should NOT be asking all these questions I CANNOT HAVE DUCKS! I CAN'T! Now I WANT ducks LOL Don't they smell more then chickens do?? And don't they need a pool or something?

My call ducks have their own coop. I had set the first pair up with a "duck house" (dog house) but they decided to move in with the chickens when they went in for the night, and since it got so cold (and the icestorm) I let them. Now I have three more added in, so they've got their own coop next door to the chickens.

We plan on putting in a small pond this summer, but for now they'll have to make do with a pool.

They do splash the water, but I have their waterer on top of a pile of hay - when the hay gets wet and they like to nibble at it, so it doesn't get muddy too badly in the coop.

I'm not sure about the extra poop thing, I'm sure it's true, because I've heard everyone tell me it is true, but the call ducks are smaller, so maybe there is less poo with Bantam sized ducks. The Blue Swedish I have on order will probably make more mess and make more poo, too.

I don't mind, though, I just want duckies so badly!!!

I soooo love my ducks..... They are cold hardy for the most part ( runners have a tough time with cold temps) They lay good and are wonderful moms and are so fun to watch. They are not very cuddly but learn to come a hang with you on there own terms. They if you dont have good drainage they can get a bit stinky. But all and all they are so much fun!!!!!!!

I have been thinking about ducks for a while now (thanks guys

) but my bff, who has had them, told me that ducks eat everything, including their poo.

Is this true? That they are messy, dirty, have way more and bigger poo than chickens. ???

I am absolutely dying here, Smartie_Pants. I have 20 Blue Swedish ordered from Ideal, they shipped yesterday. I am so nervous about the cold and shipping, and I am so obsessed with getting them HERE so I can play with baby duckies!!!

The reason I chose the Blues is because of the variety of hatchlings - I can't wait to see what I get.

Do you eat the eggs? I hear they taste stronger than chicken eggs.

Sorry if I hijacked the thread here, I am just obsessing and waiting on my blues and I am reading everything I can to keep me from calling the post office (again

What do you (anyone) do while waiting for duckies (or chickies) to come in the mail???? I've never done the mail order ducks or chicks before.

I have 5 Call Ducks (haven't had them for very long) and I am already in love with ducks. I am ordering a trio of Toulouse goslings for March delivery too. (am ordering from Metzers).

I did a taste test one day. I scrambled up a duck egg, a brown chicken egg, and a white chicken egg. I didn't notice any difference in taste at all. I don't find them stronger than any other egg.

Coolness, thanks.

I was just wondering, because I know I'll have more duck eggs than I can possibly incubate

I'll have to do something with them.

Maybe I'll offer a couple duck eggs free to my chicken egg customers, for them to try them, and if they like em, I'll sell to them, too.

I can safely say that in the 50+ i've had, I haven't seen them eat their own poop. They don't poop more, but they are more watery.

They don't HAVE to have a pool, but they sure would appreciate it. We just get cheap kiddie pools from the dollar store and collect rainwater in a barrel to fill them with.

They smell WAY better than chickens do and they will only make a mess if you have large amounts of mud on your property.

Their antics are hilarious and they make FANTASTIC mothers.

Ducks don't roost (except for Muscovies)

Mine never go into any kind of shelter, except occasionally on a warm, sunny day for a nap. If it's windy, cold or rainy, they are lovin' the outdoors. So no coop needed here.

Their eggs taste exactly like chicken eggs to me. The whites are firmer, though.

Their poop is waterier than chicken poop and MUCh easier to wash off of surfaces.

And best of all, they never, ever crow at 4:00 a.m.!

So, yeah, ducks are WAY superior to chickens
