to insulate or not

I did insulate and now I'm very glad I did. The other day, as you know, we had a spat of hot weather that is is just not normal for this time of year. I went out the coop for something, oh yeah, to check on the broody. I noticed the sun was really beating down on the west side of the coop. I put my hand on it and it was most definatly warm. I reach in through the pop door and felt inside just to see if there was a difference. The inside was really cool compared to the outside. I know that made the broody feel better. Plus it keeps the sand in the coop cooler too. That I do like.

I just built onto my original coop, a converted dog kennel. I spray foamed the new coop roof on the inside. It is corrugated metal roof and I sprayed the foam on the metal to help seal it for leaks and prevent condensation, plus for some insulation. I'm so proud to have been able to do that myself (SprayFoamDirect.com). Expensive but....I have used a shade tarp in my other garden shed converted to a coop and it made a big difference in the summer for them (I took it off for the winter). So now I have two separate areas for the chickies. The old dog kennel/new addition area can be divided into 3 different inside areas and two outside areas if needed. All of my coops are raised off the ground at least 18" for them to seek shelter and get out of the sun, bathe, and nap. So, new chickies coming in 2 weeks to join the rest of the crew! :)
