I think I fed my chicken to many mealworms. She is very swollen and not moving much. I started soaking her yesterday in warm water. I want to guve her molasses, but I don't know how much.

Hi @RebelT :frow Welcome To BYC

Can you post some photos of your chicken?
How old is she?
Do you have a source of poultry grit (crushed granite/small stones) available free choice?

I'm sorry your chicken is not feeling well. I am assuming when you mention that she is swollen - you mean the crop is full (from eating mealworms)?

Soaking a chicken in water to help with a full crop usually will not work. Save that for another time.

Depending on how long ago you fed the mealworms, she may digest/process them and be o.k. If you can, separate her so you can monitor her crop function. Provide her with water and grit. She will be o.k. with no food for a day.

When I said she is swollen, she is swollen like she is impacted with an egg or something else. I do not feel an egg. I have been giving her some molasses and water. some melon to loosen her up. I did put her in a cage for a day and feed her these fruits. she finally went potty yesterday and is moving around now. she was just laying around. So we will see. I have also been soaking her. I will try to upload a picture today.

I apologize if I misunderstood your title and your opening comments - you mentioned she ate a lot of mealworms and was swollen, so I just assumed you were talking about her crop.

You first post was on Wednesday (10/04/2017) last week. This is now Monday (10/09/2017). If she were truly "egg bound" (having an egg lodged/stuck in the oviduct) then she most likely would have already died.

Swelling of the abdomen could mean that she is laying internally or has a reproductive disorder. Egg Yolk Peritonitis, Ascites, cancer or tumors are common in laying hens. Sometimes if caught early, antibiotics may help for a short period of time. If the swelling is from fluid, then sometimes the fluid can be drained to give them some relief.
