To wash or not to wash eggs?

Yeah, I understand that. Like I said I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, just tryin to make sense of the conversation lol. I know what ya mean, I pretty much survive off the land as it is. I put up peas, green beans, squash, okra. And other veggies. I have fruit trees berry bushes, stock up on homeade jelly, and I am an avid hunting and fishing fanatic. My grocery bill is less than 50 dollars most months. I love it. Oh look you have me in survivor mode now lol, would any type of oil work on the egg to keep it for a year on the counter? lol

I don't know about the oil - that's a stretch for me - I don't have THAT much faith in the olden ways.

I love your lifestyle - can't imagine only paying $50/month for groceries! Awesome.

lol, I was just talkin hypethetically ( spelling lol ) if world war 3 happened, and we the country was in turmoil and we went into survivor mode kinda thing lol. The lifestyle isn't that hard. I enjoy working my garden and property. Hard work is good for a mans soul. Plant enough to put some up, learn how to make jelly, grab you a basket and hit the woods and find something to make it out of or cheat like me and plant blackberry bushes and muscadine vines in the yard. Plant a peach, pear, and fig tree. Then do you enjoy hunting and fishing? That covers the meat.

I have a couple things to say for those of you who don't believe in washing eggs. Chickens are dirty creatures, and unless you clean your coop daily, The nests will get dirty one way or another, even if they aren't roosted in. Pooh and dirt on eggs is disgusting and I'd much rather have a nice clean egg that doesn't last very long than a pooh covered egg that apparently lasts 3 months or so. Think about it, if you don't wash your eggs, you're probably going to be touching manure right before you cook and eat!

I guess for those of you who are fine with manure omelets and poopy refrigerators, not washing eggs is ok, but I must admit that I just don't have the guts for that.
You do know that food we buy from the grocery store also has an allowable level of everything from poop to rat hair and other sorts of stuff in it don't you? So even if you wash your eggs your probably eating poo or God knows what else in your breakfast cereal. And if your washing your eggs at the wrong temp your are causing them to suck bacteria and whatever else is present on the eggshell right through the pores of the eggshell into your food. The people in Europe are still alive after eating grocery store eggs that are unwashed and usually stored at room temp... so I'm sure the people here at BYC will survive as well. Also I don't think chickens are any nastier than any other animal we have living with us especially if you keep a tidy coop like myself.People let their cats sleep on furniture and walk on kitchen counters after their feet have been in a poopy litter box. Dogs come in and sleep on furniture dragging whatever they've stepped in into the house all over your floors and as an added bonus when they find something dead to roll in they bring that in also on their fur. They also love giving kisses to people right after eating or licking something disgusting and no one really seems to mind. I'm not sure why would it bother you so much that you would attempt to shame or scold the other posters here about their egg practices anyway, No one is telling you not to wash yours. They are just presenting options and information to the thread starter so they can decide what's comfortable for them.

Well said!

hehe had to check to see if you were the prepper...yup. Eggs are always useful, if you think you have more than you will ever need than start canning so you don't loose any. The older the better to can with (as long as they are still eatable), they taste great, store nicely, look pretty, and make great gifts. Never too many.
my mom is now canning the eggs I have been giving her, --I think she said she was canning with kielbasa and or beets by pickling? I haven't tried to do the old fashion canning yet.(just cucumber pickling)

Not prepping, just wondering out of curiosity because I don't know anything about the oil thing or what all the different oils are that would work. I do like being self sufficient though. Its more healthy and also rewarding and fun to eat a complete meal that came to your table by way of your shotgun and hard work out in the yard. I love it. How does your Mom can the eggs? Just a regular pickled egg recipe? Or is it something special?
