Today's temperature = # of eggs.

The temp in the area of Michigan we live in was below 6 degrees farenheit at dawn and rose to 12 degrees throughout the day.
5 eggs from 18 hens. Color is the only way I can identify which breed layed them and to tell you the truth, I didnt look! Most likely my barred rocks, black sex links and buff orpingtons.
Averaging 3 to 7 daily but just added light and heat 2 days ago. So far today, we have 5 and counting til dark.
Weather to warm up to 50 by tuesday of next week! Whoo Hoo! Who cares about eggs, lets go swimming.

All of my eggs are coming from my Black Sex Link hens and then I have 3 pullets that are a cross between my Black Sex Link, Momma Hen and our Splash Laced Red Wyandotte rooster, Whiski

Whiski in the center and two of my 6 BSL hens

Last week we got down to -18 degrees here in northern Utah, and still got 3 eggs out of all 3 of our hens! My mom claims it is the mashed potatoes and gravy!

20 years ago we lived in Anchorage, Alaska and I would know if it was a "cold" day if I walked outside in the morning and my nose hairs immediatly froze.

Other than that - cold was just cold and you really adjusted to it and lived with it. Of course we didn't have chickens then. I would have worried about them in those temps. They do amaze me at what they can endure without complaint.
I can't imagine it up there in Alaska for chickens. LOL. But they do it I guess! amazing.

The nose hair inidicator, would definitely tell you the difference between zero and -20 or -30. LOL> I guess you are right, now that you say. Nose hairs straightened right up yesterday and this AM. Found one more egg that my EE must have laid right after I left for work. Came home at lunch and she was frozen solid and cracked down the center longways (the egg that is). LOL. I actually think I might have had my RIR stop now and Wyandotte during this cold snap (they've trudged along through November/December/ and half of this month) But the eggs I'm getting today are from my Australorp, Orpington and EE. Not completely sure about the Wyandotte stopping, but she's slowing down a bit. So 3 eggs out of potentially 4 layers today.

I'm sorry Im messing up this clear cut thread here. LOL. I tend to do that. Get egg-cited about talking chicken I guess.

Central Ohio, 5 above Tuesday night, High temp of 16 on Wednesday, heat lamp has been soaking the girls perch and they must like it. 9 eggs today from 9 hens and 3 pullets mix of Black Copper Marans, White Columbians, and Amber Links.

23 degrees F. right now and so far about 6 eggs from my 16 hens today (mostly from the 9 pullets). Will have to check again soon!
