Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

Very interesting. I kept it close to 30% up until day 18. Cool to know lockdown can be done at a lower humidity.

Well the first time that I did my hatch I really wrote down a lot of stuff and the numbers on my hygrometer.

When eggs start externally pipping they release humidity into the incubator so even if I keep it at 30% after the 18 days, once I start getting external pips it will go up to 45% or 50% by itself.

It's just some of what needed to come off didn't and it's attached to the membrane. It will go away on its own. Usually they just detach themselves. Just as long as no intestines are hanging out, It will be fine. I don't see any intestines.

Usually when this happens to me I take isopropyl alcohol to my scissors and I cut really close to the shell. What is left that is hanging off always gets absorbed or taken off by itself.

When I had that issue someone told me to cut close to the shell with sterilized scissors... This is what it looked like after I did it

Thank you so much. I am so grateful for your quick response. It was worsening from dragging the shell around so I quickly sterilized my scissors and snipped as close to the shell as I could. Faced my fear of opening the bator.

Yeah don't worry you won't shrink wrap anything opening it really quick.

I think a lot of people who experience shrink wrapping put the lid up and hold it there for a long amount of time. If you just go in and out you can do what you need to do.

I used to have a fear about opening it up and Kiki told me to stop worrying and just be fast. So that's what I do now.

And whatever is hanging off it will either dry off, fall off, or absorb.

I don't know why they get stuck to the membrane like that! That happened to several chicks in my first hatch and I was so upset.

I also had nine checks that were fully developed but drowned in the shell because of the humidity issue that I had...

My first hatch was a rough one, but I'm still doing it so it didn't traumatize me too much

I also think shrink wrapping is most likely more complicated than it's often made out to be.

I've seen a lot of what I wouldn't actually consider shrink wrap being called shrink wrap as well. I personally only consider it truly shrink wrapped when the thick outer membrane shrinks around a chick, they really can't turn when that happens! I've seen a lot of chicks turn just fine when the inner membrane is a little dry (that membrane isn't nearly as tough even when dry).

The two worst cases of shrink wrap I've experienced happened when I hadn't opened the incubator during the hatch. The chicks made a very large external pip both times and the forced air fan was blowing close to or directly on them.

Wow that almost looks like an intestine! I would have though it was if I saw that! So glad to hear the little one was just fine.

I always snip the cord if it's still stuck as well, don't want the little ones pulling on their naval too much by dragging the shell around.
