Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

I candles my other silkie egg. I think it’s a late quitter. Did not see movement. Lots of black. Did not hear any chirping. Did not smell. I put it back in just in case but now I’m on the hunt for a couple of day olds to keep my singleton company. What do you all think? Quitter?

I don't see any veins, so I think it quit.

Hmm, because a fully formed chick will make for a dark egg it's hard to say. It's not super late yet so it's possible that it's still working on it, I usually see some kind of movement of the membrane when I candle though.

What are your feelings about leaving an early bird in my brinsea maxi? The two other eggs have pipped but I sometimes worry s/he might get heat exhaustion from the forced air after too many hours. Thoughts? And, yes, I’ve hatched over 400 chicks & now that I have a hatch along with people to bounce things off of again I’ve gone neurotic.

It's always nice to get a second, third, or fourth opinion when you're feeling uncertain!
I have never been concerned about my chicks overheating in an incubator though. You would see some type of distress if it were too hot, holding it's wings away from its body, panting, that sort of thing. I do take my chicks out when they're dry enough but only if I don't have any external pips in the incubator and even then I prefer not open it too often.

If you really think about it, they've been at that exact same temperature for 21 days so they're probably super comfortable. lol

I think it quit too. I haven't seen any movement or heard any chirping and I havent been watching 24/7 but Ive been bator watching quite a bit. I leave it in for now just in case. Thanks

Yes, I have a feeling it was a late quitter but Im leaving it in for now because there is still time and it does not smell. I did see movement at lockdown so that stinks. Today was the first time I opened the bator. Thanks again.

Bit of a scare this morning. For the second morning in a row both thermometers have been reading high, 103.5 This is a still air incubator so not as serious as a forced air but never a good thing. The incubator has actually been pretty darn stable temp wise. I've been keeping it around 101-102° measured at the top of the egg. So I believe the extra degree is caused by the heat now being generated by the eggs (day 15&17) combined with the incubator not being opened overnight. During the day I turn them by hand so the temp never has a chance to build up like that. I've adjusted it down now that I know it's likely a recurring issue. Yesterday I thought it was a fluke. I candled today to check on them. Good veining and movement in all eggs! What a relief that was. What do you think? About the temp fluctuation.

I think I've decided to stop turning all eggs on Monday (day 17/19). But not bump the humidity until I hear peeping or see a pip. I think this will be the best outcome for all eggs. What I'm not sure about is if I want to deal with trying to track chicks as they hatch. I know some of you rig up little baskets and such. I just have so many breeds and mixes. Or maybe I just choose eggs that will hatch chicks of different colors. Put those together. I do have a second incubator I can use if needed. But for experimental purposes I'd like to see things through with the still air incubator. From start to finish. That limits me on room. For those who separate eggs how successful is it really?

Do you think I should candle my last egg in the bator with my one silkie baby? I have not seen movement or chirping. I mean I could still just wait day 21 starts at 3:00pm today. The only reason I would do it now is to know if I have to search around for a couple day olds to keep my singleton company or not.

I would leave it in for a while too. Just to be sure. I didn’t see any movement when I candled the little one I tried to help and it was still alive so maybe just wait a bit.
