Hello, somewhat newer gardener here.

So we've had a garden for two years now but have always just purchased our plants. Which has varying results each time, which is understandable.

This year, if we still can, we were thinking of starting some heritage varieties of what we can; and then saving the seeds.

Just curious how late is too late to start plants indoors or if we should just plan on buying plants again this year. We are in North Dakota, zone 3.

Thanks!

You definitely have time to start your seeds (indoors). I'm Zone 5 and I always start mine the weekend after the first day of spring.
I've been starting everything from seed for 4 years now, and no longer get diseases (blights and such) in my garden. I highly recommend it!

If I start seeds indoors I do what @Trish1974 does and start around the first day of spring. I tend to have difficulties with the transition of the seedlings from indoor to outdoor, so last year I tried sowing my seeds directly in my raised beds instead. They went in the ground about May 15 (we have a short growing season), and some went in closer to Memorial Day. I figured when the conditions were right, they would begin to grow. It actually turned out being my most successful garden year. You will have to check your seed packets though, some plants have a longer time from seed to harvest than others. Look at how long it takes them to produce and when you typically expect your first frost. Good luck! It may not be perfect timing for you, but it doesn't hurt to try!

Wow, I'm jealous. Here in TX we have to start in early March and hope for no frost. Then, wham, April hits us with hot winds and 90s. Texas has mostly winter and summer.
