Took my chicken to the vet today--

This is just something I have often wondered about, they produce these chicks so fast and so many it's got to be causing something to break down in the make up [genes] of these birds. Like being egg bound or prolaspes my aunt and uncle who had a farm years and years ago never heard of this stuff. It's kind of like breedings in puppy mills and etc. these animals always have genetic disorders. Why not from chicks as well since they are massed produced by the millions. Just something to think about. Did you vet say anything about her liver? Is she eating and drinking on her own? Have you tried giving her kifer or yogurt?

I just went through this with my EE pullet from that hatchery as well! She was also 8 months old. The symptoms started out like you are describing- about 5 days after a real cold snap. She was laying, however, from September to November. I got her as one of a pair- the other is fine.

She was looking poorly for about 2 weeks and then started looking real bad- bad enough to be brought in. I lost my Rita on Sunday after a 2 plus week battle (in chicken ICU) with almost exactly what you are describing. However, my hen got respiratory symptoms at the end and was not able to stand after a week into her illness. Once I got her stool solid (it was always green and white), she started eating! and then got what seemed like chest congestion. I started her on tylan, but she died after her second dose. I may have gotten fluid in her lungs when feeding her? She always looked bright in the face and got really excited when she heard the flock. It was really sad. She gobbled up bread and hulled sunflower seeds once she started eating.

I hope your result is different. I gave Rita some subQ fluids (the vet could show you how) and that really made her better. I thought that she was going to make it. But, she didn't. I didn't do an autopsy, though I wish I did. My vet thought liver failure- said green poop is likely from liver failure in her case?- and said just to watch the others.

Again, hope your outcome is better. Strange, about the same hatchery, same age thing, huh?

edited for detail- she was "off looking" for 2-3 weeks and in chicken ICU (in my garage and then house) for another 2 weeks.

I hope Ariel gets better soon, sounds like you are doing all you can for her certainly!

I had a hen die suddenly with very little symptoms until the afternoon before she died. She wasn't hanging around the others and her comb was pale. She did however make it up to roost that evening so I thought she'd be ok. Next morning, I found her under the roost dead.

I did have my friend, a vet, do a necropsy and she found a tumor on her liver had burst. She didn't think she'd find any cause of death but she was wrong.
