Topic of the Week - Deworming chickens

I'm still hoping SOMEONE will tell me how long I should feed my two hens medicated feed for roundworms?!! Using strike III. I dosed for 7 days of feed but I can't get any info on how many days I should for two hens, etc. anyone! I need to know! I've called the feed place, I've looked online, read tons of medical info....nothing.
I need to do more research, but I think that Rooster Booster and Strike III and probably about the same.

Did you read this?

I don't know if it's true or not, but I cannot find any other info.

Thank you!!! I JUST read in my chicken health handbook about the Strike III being an antibiotic. I think I'd rather go with the valbazen! But I don't think my farm store carries it. They are the ones who recommended this feed. But no one I talk to has chickens as pets. It's different when you have huge flocks. I think I'd rather give the valbazen?! Covers all types of worms and then repeat just once. Where can I get it? I'd like a smaller bottle for my two girls. I give fresh garlic about once a week, they love it!

It's usually in the goat or cattle section, won't be in the poultry section... or Safeguard 10% for goats works well too... I've used both with excellent deworming results in my chickens, ducks and turkeys... :)

Okay, I've read over this thread over the passed two weeks as I have limited time. I have to ask, I saw is at mentioned somewhere here but, what brand can we use to treat gapeworm, cecal, roundworm and capillary all at once? Kathy, I saw think you mentioned the safest option somewhere? I get confused as there's many different treatments. Safeguard, Daneguard, valbulizen, sp?, etc etc. Which is awesome the one the starves the worms over a few days? Does isawtst only treat roundworms? I'm sorry for asking questions that I know are on this thread but I'd like to sum it all up here.

Many posts say that Valbazen kills slowly over a few days, but I asked for a source that says that and no one could produce one.

I'm still researching, but I think that a single dose of Valbazen @0.18 ml per pound will treat most types of capillary worms.

As far as I know, gapes require several days with all wormers.

The best treatment for tapeworms is praziquantel.

Some studies say that ivermectin is not an effective poultry wormer.

A single dose of Safeguard should treat cecal worms and/or large roundworms.

Some vets say to give Safeguard at 0.23 ml per pound for five days.

Wazine (piperazine) treats large roundworms.

The more I learn about worming, the more I think people really need to have routine fecals done so they can choose the correct wormer.

Trying to figure out dose of Safeguard for bantams.

- From the other thread/http://www.usfarad.org/drug-wdi-faqs.html

This is what I have

Now, using the suggested dose of 1 mg/kg bodyweight, that means 0.5mg dose for one bantam as they each weigh about half a kilo. But! The dewormer suspension is 100mg/mL. If I want to dose 0.5mg, does that mean I need to get them 1/200 of a mL...? The tiniest measuring syringe..!

Thanks guys! What worms are treated with safeguard? Is it one that you should not use while birds are molting?

Also, anyone have any suggestions for mail in fecals? Someone posted one that cost only $10 on one of my many many facebook groups about a month ago and now I cant find it. Any suggestions?I have never wormed my chickens but would like first get the fecals done. Should I just gather fresh droppings from multiple birds in each pen and submit samples by pen? Or would I have to do each bird individually. Also, What is the best time of year to do the testing. Spring and fall? Would it not be a good time of year right now to do them, it's been getting below freezing recently. Thank you for all the knowledge you guys provide.

If you want to use the UK 1 mg/kg for five days this is the math: 0.5 kg (1/2 kg) x 1 (mg/kg) 100 (mg/ml) = 0.005 ml per 0.5 kg, so impossible to give undiluted. Probably best to mix 1 ml (100 mg ) Safeguard into 99 ml water. Stir very well. Now you have a solution that's 1 mg/ml. 0.5 kg x 1 (mg/kg) / 1 (mg/ml) = 0.5 ml per 0.5 kg. Does that help and make sense? Please double check my math!

Not positive, but I think any wormer in the same family as Safeguard should not be used during molt. Again, this is one of those things where there are hundreds of posts that say Valbazen can be used during molt, but no one can produce a source that says it will not cause feather defects. One article I found that was written by a vet suggests that Valbazen and others in the same family could cause feather defects.

When my friend does his fecal, he does them by pen, then treats that pen accordingly. Having them tested now would be fine.

Oh yes, thank you! There seems to be a very broad range of recommended doses (1-50mg/kg repeat, one study had a dose at 100mg/kg

) , so I'm muddling my way though. Diluting it out is an excellent idea. :)
