Totally creepy!

I just find it disturbing, that's all, feral or not. You see a gray and white cat lying in the yard and you go grab a shotgun to blow it's head off? Who says it's even the offending predator? It could be some innocent cat enjoying the sun. And to say that "people should keep their pets secured" is funny, considering we're on a message board where people let their pets roam free all day to enjoy themselves, but now someone can't let their cat outside? Three people on my small road keep chickens and geese, and one couple owns two Huskies who have gotten loose on more than one occasion and killed some of the chickens. I can't imagine shooting their dog over it, whether I'm legally allowed to or not. I truly mean no disrespect, but I do feel we're all entitled to our own opinions. You can shoot a cat if you want, and I can say it bothers me if I want. Take Care.

So long as you're not trying to start some ruckus, then I'm fine with stating your opinion. Some may free-range their cats, personally, I think it's wrong, but that's a discussion for another thread. But, this was definately NOT someone's pet. It's a pain in the arse cat that's been ripping up peoples' garbage and killing the local birds (apparantly domestic birds as well as the wild birds). I wasn't planning on blowing its head off either way. If I had wanted to do that, I'd have grabbed the .22 250 with hollow points. I wanted a good clean, painless kill for the cat, because, yes, I DO believe that if you're planning on killing something, you need to do it RIGHT and as stress-free for the animal as possible. As for the dogs, I'd have shot them as well if they had done the same thing to me. First, would of course be to go to the owners, then if they refused/couldn't control their dogs, then my animals' lives are more important to me than a set of dogs whos' owners cannot control them. Call me a mean arse, but, if it were my dog destroying livestock/pets, I'd be pretty upset, but I would understand that it was MY fault for letting the dog loose. We DID have a problem with her for a little while with escaping. Just so happens that our dog isn't a thrill killer and we got her under control before she did get shot. If your animals are running loose, you need to expect that at some point in time, they may get killed, whether it be by another predator, car accident (or non-accident), shotgun, poison, whatever. If you don't want to see your animal killed, restrain it.

One, it's called a feral cat. Two, people need to keep their pets secured. I'm allowed, by law, to shoot any feral cats that happen to be destroying my "livestock". They really don't even need to be after my livestock for me to be allowed to shoot them. Either way, I'm going to ask not to discuss the "ethics" of shooting a feral.

Well put. No reason to go there. Strange scenario, kind of creepy.

What a weird, creepy situation!
I'm so sorry you lost animals

Stay safe, and I hope you find the answer soon.

That is really weird! Folks, I want to remind you of our rules for this section.

*Dealing with predators and pests is not always pleasant. Although sometimes hard to do, please be as sensitive as possible when explaining procedures and results. Some younger members and/or squeamish adults will appreciate it.

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

*That being said, please do not gloat or suggest torturous ways of killing for pleasure or indeed, post in such a way that your predator control can be construed as pleasure killing instead of simply taking care of a problem.

*Compassion will go a long way toward helping to educate and help solve someone's predator problem. No matter the reason, most members' birds are their pets and being a chicken doesn't make it less of a pet than a house cat or companion dog. Please don't lecture or hassle anyone about their losses. Glass houses......

*If you wish to suggest an alternate non lethal means of control, please share it in a non judgemental way that is a viable solution and not merely complaining about who was here first etc, IF it is directly related to the OP's request for assistance. If a non lethal alternative is offered, please be appreciative and remember that there are many ways and means and flaming a member for suggesting such an alternative will not be tolerated.

*It is the responsibility of the person with the predator to determine the legalities of what they do and that person will take ultimate responsibility. BYC does not condone illegal acts.

I may be the only one who feels this way but I will shoot a dog also if it is terrorizing my animals.

Definately not the only one. A "stray" beagle just about got it when it had actually come INTO my home. Honestly, the only thing that saved it was the fact that it was a first time offender and didn't actually do any harm. It's never returned, which is good all around.

Sory to hear you had to go through that & I hope you get the guilty party. Amen to that about protecting your animals! We have neighbors who let their dogs run all over the neighborhood doing whatever they please & act like you're nuts when you go running outside hollering "NO! GO HOME!!!" so they don't kill my chickens IN MY OWN YARD. Most people who free range their chix do so on their own land, & if they do go outside that protected area, then that's my bad if they get ravaged by someone's dog/cat, run over by a car, etc. I've had 1 almost killed IN HER OWN ENCLOSURE, MINDING HER OWN BUSINESS on my property by a weenie dog that managed to tunnel under the fence. I was able to save her, & my kids are even friends w/ the dog's owner's kids, but I make it clear to them when I see that dog out AGAIN, & AGAIN, &AGAIN, along with their other 4 dogs that those kids have to leave & go corral their pets, then come back to play later. I try hard to be a good neighbor by keeping my dog secured & my birds are ONLY in my yard, under my supervision, but still I would beat the tar out of an animal if it comes over & tries to get any of my animals & doesn't take heed to my hollering. I bought a bb gun in back when the problem was really severe, but it has really gotten a lot better since we first moved here 6 months ago. I've never had to use it. OK- SPEAK OF THE DEVIL. THE BLANKING DOGS WERE JUST IN MY YARD TEARING THE FEATHERS OUT OF MY ROOSTER & NOW MY FAVE HEN'S MISSING!!! From now on its shot when i see its foot touch my yard. If they were killing/attacking people's chihuahuas or kittens it'd be a total riot going on about it. I gotta go I'm so mad right now!!!
