Toulouse Geese Thread

Do they need a large pool? All I have is a tub, it's just big enough for one. DH wants to get a kiddy pool but this one is deeper and rubber so it won't crack or rust, but I could probably find the same tub in a larger size.
They really do need a pool big enough for both to get into mine even get into the smaller kiddy pool. But they can mate easier if they have water.

I think it's fine especially if he isn't doing it aggressively, Sammy nibbles on Missy it's me he wants to be mean to. Lightly nipping here is a sign of affection, just wait till mating season starts and you see what Trina does to Pom, lol I was amazed at how aggressive Missy was to Sam biting on him etc. Try not to interfere they are working on a relationship.
Hi, well that´s interesting. The only time my ganders peck at the geese is if it´s NOT his goose and wants to shoo her away from the food, or if he´s hanging on to her head feathers there in the water. Maybe it´s a breed thing. Mine are very gentle in general. Being Emden behaviour, you´d know.

Sammy isn't being aggressive when he is nibbling on Missy he just likes to nibble on her. Now I have seen her out and out bite him, then they mate.

I found the same tub but twice the size (mine is 6.5 gallons and the big one is 15 gallons) online and it's only $30 so I think I'll go ahead and order one. It's the perfect bucket - made of reinforced rubber so it's less likely to grow that green mossy stuff, it won't crack in the cold or crack from sun damage, at least not for a few year. And because it's rubber and has a nice lip on it it's easy for the geese to grab on and climb in or out without tripping or if they DO trip the side of the tub flexes so they don't get hurt. It's also pretty easy to dump cause I don't have to worry about it cracking, I can just haul it over and dump haha.

Do any of you use straw as bedding/floor covering in the goose house? The ground can get kind of wet here in the winter, we get rain and sometimes some sleet-ey slushy hail crap so I'm trying to plan ahead so I don't get sore goosey feet.

Sounds nice can you give a link to the tub? and I use shaving [thick] not fine on the floor of my goose house, they snuggle down into it, but nice part about it is their poop mainly lays on top so I just scoop it out and fluff up the bedding, it's about 6-8" deep.

Here's the tub, I LOVE the one I already have. I'll probably start making plans for steps for future baby geese and ducklings tohave better access

The same kind of shavings most people use in chick brooders? I have TONS of that! I use it for all the chicken bedding, but I'm switching to straw in the nest boxes for ease of cleaning. Do I need to insulate the walls of the goose house at all? It does get below freezing, but rarely much past that.

I think Pom is realizing he is Big Man on Campus LOL He waddles around like the king of the yard, the only person he doesn't stand up to is me. He will eat from my hand, but if I'm walking toward him he runs. He hisses at and tries to bite anyone else. But the best part? He is TERRIFIED of my little silkie chicken!!!! She is easily the most skittish chicken in my flock, tiny, fast, and impossible to catch. She's scared of people as well as most of the other chickens. But for some reason that little fluffy white ninja of a chicken terrifies Pom. It's so much fun to watch this new flock haha.
Pom's gotten some confidence and will come out part way into the driveway with Trina now. They hang out near each other during the day, but she still keeps her distance, and they have to be separated at night because she freaks out if she can't "get away" from him, which annoys the crap outta him so he nips her to tell her to shut up which just riles her up more, it's a vicious cycle so for now they are separated by a solid piece of plywood. If she can't see him, she's totally fine. So much attitude.
Trina has finally started her weird shrieking again - which was my original motivation to get her a mate - and Pom follows her around and honks and shrieks with her so I'm hoping they are started to see each other in a new more romantic light

Same shaving but not the fine. I like the tub too, might be a mite close for the both of them do you think? She'll change her tune towards Pom once mating season arrives.

And only children have a harder time adjusting to anything new.

That's so funny that the big gander Pom is scared of a tiny silkie chicken

My husband thinks we might have the 15 gal, so he is going to scower the internet for something big enough for the both of them but that won't get destroyed in the sun here. Kiddie pools are way too expensive to have to buy one (or more) every year.

The little silkie goes darting around the yard, frightened of her own shadow, and he just about jumps out of his skin - eyes wide, head up, squealing in terror! He's such a weirdo! I love it! Perfect addition to Trina's spoiled clumsy self. She still has trouble eating, I'm wondering if she's just sorta dumb? She stuffs her face until she can't get water down, and then pukes it up all over the place when she runs into something or tries to honk at something. It's so weird!!!! It's not as bad as it was when she was obviously sick and she went to the vet, but it's still a weird habit. I'm home all day so I'm thinking about giving her 3 or 4 small scheduled meals to see if that helps.

I think you ought to try that on the meals and see if it helps, would love to see a video of the lil silkie scaring Pom that's hilarious.

What is it she stuffs her face with? Is it only now and again that she throws it up, ormquite regularly? Because geese will throw up, for example, if they´re frightened when you pick them up, so if she´s frightened and runs into something, maybe that makes her throw up the food....or maybe even give her less prepared feed and more greens...more natural, and goes through the system quickly....shouldn´t get a "bottle-neck"!
