Toulouse Geese Thread

What is it she stuffs her face with? Is it only now and again that she throws it up, ormquite regularly? Because geese will throw up, for example, if they´re frightened when you pick them up, so if she´s frightened and runs into something, maybe that makes her throw up the food....or maybe even give her less prepared feed and more greens...more natural, and goes through the system quickly....shouldn´t get a "bottle-neck"!

OK, isn´t it interesting how different types of geese are.....
Yes it is,I have seen Missy be very aggressive with Sam during mating ritual almost like wrestling.

and since I feed fermented feed to my flock I am going to have to take a pic of Sam after he has eaten, he usually has ff plastered all around his mouth it's hilarious.

I think you ought to try that on the meals and see if it helps, would love to see a video of the lil silkie scaring Pom that's hilarious.
I've been trying to get one but I'm never fast enough to catch the silkie or Pom's initial reaction, just his honking "how RUUUUUUDE" afterward lol

She used to just do it all the time, she would walk over to the water to get a drink and when she bent down after the first gulp the water would just fall out! It's the weirdest thing. It still happens like that sometimes, it might even be daily and Im just not seeing it happen since she's outside bonding with Pom. But it sounds like it's the frightened puking, usually when she is honking at something or someone on the street.
I did notice that it happened a lot less with greens, but I still think she over eats - even with greens she gets a bottle neck, just less puking it up

Yesterday I was saying that Pom is responding to what I think are mating calls from Trina, but TODAY Trina is responding to Pom! Oh I'm so super excited! He goes out into the driveway and shrieks and flaps and she perks up, shrieks back, and heads over there. She's still a little shy and won't get too close but I think it's all heading in the right direction.

I have 1 Toulouse goose she gets along well with the Muscovy's, she isn't that loud comparing her to my Embden gander who is very loud. she free ranges really good and she did fly down my driveway so I clipped one wing. Water well if you mean for bathing I think any goose appreciates some water for bathing, mine are very happy with kiddy pools and when weather permits bath daily.

Yes bathing water, clipping wings would probably be a good idea. Are the fairly protective? Iv heard of geese chasing people they don't know?
I'm still new to geese, I only have two, but my one goose who was hand raised in the house is very friendly, even to those she doesn't know (although she will honk he guts out at ANYone appearing new in her surroundings at first), but my gander will bite everyone but me. He chases children and my MIL who unfortunately for her is quite small so he probably thinks she is a child lol

Had a friend and her 11 y/o son come over to help me process 7 roosters on friday. Pom and Trina were out and about while we worked. They both seemed rather offended at the actual slaughtering, but it may have been all the ruckus of having 7 roosters suddenly show up in our small yard. They treated my friend like any other adult, Trina was leary until she was given a treat, and Pom honked hissed and steered clear.
Her son was a different story entirely!
Pom made every effort to come after the boy. Not running, but neck outstretched, hissing and honking and NOT happy at all. After the initial anger he settled into his routine, but every time the boy made a move Pom started towards him again. Not sure if he was just defensive in general, or protecting Trina - Trina stayed behind him the whole time, the boy was trying to feed them some lettuce at first to try to make friends but that didn't really work.

Sure was fun to watch! Pom's become a little more aggressive to my MIL and BIL chasing and hissing and striking to bite, but DH stood up to him, got right down in his face and then gave him a good swat on the nose and Pom hasn't tried his nonsense with him since. We will see how long that lasts LOL

As you can tell, geese are big show offs and will go as far as they are allowed to, if someone acts afraid then oh boy they will make the best of that situation, but if you stand up to them they will usually back off,. Now during breeding season it's best not to let strangers around them, the ganders are only acting like they normally would during mating season but someone could get bitten. of flogged. I let my grandchildren around my geese 15-13-11 but I am right there and they know not to chase, run at them or act silly. Geese like slow movements and quiet [unless they are the ones making the noise.] lol

Geese are very protective of their goslings, and the gander is protective of his mate, now they could not stand up to a large predator even a small mink can kill a goose, but they will help keep flying preds from coming around. A large flock of geese maybe able to protect other flock members but honestly I don't see it happening, They really don't stand a chance against something with teeth. They are mainly bluff.

Hello and welcome to the "world of geese." I have 2 Toulouse geese, 8 months old, since fuzzy little peepers. They are mates now and tame, even the gander. But, in the past, I had a cross between a Pilgrim & Egyptian gander and, boy, he was was the best protection for my ducks and thought every baby duck was his! So cute. I dared not turn my back on him. He would grab my jeans with skin and twist. So Tom Roudiebush, the guy who makes the pelleted bird food, told me how to handle a gander. When they "think" they are sneaking up on you, turn, place your foot on their breast between their legs and give them a good toss. Of course, I did not have the strength that my husband did, but after a couple tosses, he allowed me to stay in "his" space. You just want to throw them off-balance. They don't like it and it won't hurt them physically, just their pride. I would never hurt an animal or fellow human being.

Unbeknownst to me, he had bonded with my Toulouse who passed on at age 21. He died of a broken heart 2 weeks later, which surprised me, as I still had 2 female mallard ducks he was raised with.

I never had to clip the wings of any bird. My duck would take off, fly as high as the peak of the roof and circle the yard and land gently. If they are happy and have a great home, they aren't going to leave. At least that is the way I have always felt.

Have fun with your new geese and interact with them as much as you can. And all of you BYC fans, go to the movies and see "Free Birds." I laughed the entire way through the movie. Now I know why, even as a child, I was and am now a vegetarian :)
