Hello and welcome to the "world of geese." I have 2 Toulouse geese, 8 months old, since fuzzy little peepers. They are mates now and tame, even the gander. But, in the past, I had a cross between a Pilgrim & Egyptian gander and, boy, he was was the best protection for my ducks and thought every baby duck was his! So cute. I dared not turn my back on him. He would grab my jeans with skin and twist. So Tom Roudiebush, the guy who makes the pelleted bird food, told me how to handle a gander. When they "think" they are sneaking up on you, turn, place your foot on their breast between their legs and give them a good toss. Of course, I did not have the strength that my husband did, but after a couple tosses, he allowed me to stay in "his" space. You just want to throw them off-balance. They don't like it and it won't hurt them physically, just their pride. I would never hurt an animal or fellow human being.
Unbeknownst to me, he had bonded with my Toulouse who passed on at age 21. He died of a broken heart 2 weeks later, which surprised me, as I still had 2 female mallard ducks he was raised with.
I never had to clip the wings of any bird. My duck would take off, fly as high as the peak of the roof and circle the yard and land gently. If they are happy and have a great home, they aren't going to leave. At least that is the way I have always felt.
Have fun with your new geese and interact with them as much as you can. And all of you BYC fans, go to the movies and see "Free Birds." I laughed the entire way through the movie. Now I know why, even as a child, I was and am now a vegetarian
