Toulouse Geese Thread

I was also very relieved to see that somebody will close the gate and keep her in so she won't follow him. I found the following information online about what happened to this particular goose:

Maria, along with the other geese present at Echo Park were temporarily relocated to Los Angeles Zoo in April 2011 and placed into quarantine, as the park underwent restoration and the lake was drained. It was at this time that veterinarians at the zoo discovered that Maria was in fact a male goose and is now named Mario. Zoo officials have permanently housed Mario at the Children's zoo and Mr. Ehrler, Mario's best friend, still frequently visits.

At some point their was nearly a custody battle as Mr. Ehrler had asked to be allowed to take Mario and move to Oregon. However, the State of California told him that since the geese are non-migratory, they are therefore the property of the state. It was shortly after that when Mario was made a permanent addition to the zoo.

I also found an article that said due to attempted attacks on the birds by coyotes in late 2011, that all the domestic ducks and geese were relocated by the state to safer areas in February of 2012. They consulted with waterfowl and wildlife experts, and kept groups together when they moved them to two different lakes that closely resembled Echo Park where they lived. It seems that at least this part of California keeps a close eye on the domestics that end up on state property and acts in their best interest, which is very refreshing.
What a great ending. Thank you for finding this out. Too bad mario couldn't have moved though.

I remember seeing this video a while back and there is a follow up video of after they drained the lake. In the video, they said Mario got so depressed in quarantine they had the man come visit the gander at the zoo. I did not know, however, that the man tried to take ownership of the gander and was refused. That is not cool, even if they did make the gander a permanent addition to the zoo.

I think it's kinda strange that geese that get dumped in a park and don't migrate are all of a sudden owned by the state. But they did try to do the best for these waterfowl, but Mario and Mr. E. would have been so happy in their retirement years together.

Mr. E keeps a facebook page for Maria/Mario. He says that he enjoys going to the zoo and introducing the goose to the children. I don't know for sure, but it almost sounds like they have worked something out with him, which would be better for them both.

Great I'll have to look them up.
