With Molly girl, well we got lucky. After realizing that Buddy was a Toulouse dude, we wanted a mate for him. I searched Craigslist; put a WTB on it for a Toulouse girl. It was just the wrong time of year. My Brother In Law is a regular visitor to our place as he hunts the back 40. He used to find it amusing that we sit and talk to our geese after putting them in for the night, until we pointed out his hours in a tree stand staring at a corn field.
One morning he calls all excited. He was driving down a country road about 6 miles from here when he spotted geese in the road being herded by a lady. The thing that got him excited was the type of geese: Toulouse. He stopped and talked to the lady and told her of our interest in a mate for Buddy. He never did get her name, but gave me good directions. I went out there after Christmas and talked to the lady's daughter and gave her our phone #. She called, offered up one of her year-old Toulouse gals for $20. Deal.
We bundled Molly into a carrier and drove her home. Yeah, we were supposed to segregate her for a month; had a place set up for her and everything. She got out and ran to the flock right away. Well, the damage was done, so we just left her with them. Thankfully they were all fine. But Buddy never did like her. He chased her off any time she got near him. That *******!
One spring morning I noticed that Molly was not with her flock but when I checked back later she had returned. That made me think she was laying a nest somewhere. I followed at a safe distance the next time she snuck away and found her nest. We bundled up the eggs w/ some nesting material and put it in the garage so she'd be protected. She took to the nest right away and laid 9 more eggs.
Moral of the story: Word of mouth works well for finding geese.
