Toulouse Geese Thread

Do you close them up in their house at night? if so she knows where the new spot is, but like lb says they can be stubborn, I took a piece of scrap ply wood and screwed it to a 2x4 in Missy and Sams house to give her a bit of privacy from Sam when she was laying she loved it last year. it doesn't even go up to the ceiling it is only about 2' tall and about 3'wide but it's enough for her to get behind and feel she is private. she kept wanting to lay in the duck house so after I did the board she stopped going in there.

Wow KUKU! She really didn't want those eggs to be found.

We got another egg today. This one froze though

. Dang this cold cold weather! Tomorrow we will be lucky to get a break, but it's supposed to rain and the next day the temps are supposed to drop again. I know that the whole nation is having crazy weather lately, but I really need a break from this wild wind and cruddy cold.

I've got two heat lamps out there now. I had a hanging heater there, but it died. The newer ones we've got blow the fuses, it might be time to close it up and move the geese over to the big coop where the chickens and cats are. That one stays much warmer.
I'm thinking heat lamps so so dangerous it's best not use to them, if your geese/duck is out of the wind and weather and have plenty of deep bedding they should be fine with out it, they have down under those feathers. Their tougher than we give them credit for and using heat and then they go out into those frigid temps seems that's doing more harm than good.

To be honest, I think it´s going to be very diffiult. She knows where her eggs are. They´re just not where she wants them to be.Give her a couple of days..if the old nest is impossible to get to, she may just give up, but they´re very determined. Make the one you´ve made for her cosy. I use barrels on their side, and water tanks cut in half so they have a little place to go in..the height isn´t that important, they like to duck into their nest. As long as they have enough floor space. Can you put your finger on why she lkkes that particular spot, and why i´s different to the other? Is it quieter there? Is it lower down? etc She´ll have an egg inside her and she needs somewhere to dump it, so hopefully the new nest will be the place. Or, let her slowly get over the fact that she´s lost her nest and wait for her to start again in a better place. Just keep an eye on what she´s up to. You may end up having goose egg omelettes yet.

She spent some time digging around the old spot, but I checked out the window just now and they new nest looks buried like the old one was, I havent checked it yet, I was thinking I'd give her a day or two without messing with it to see if she will use it.
The goose house is a childrens plastic playhouse - all the windows are closed so the only opening is the doorway. It's just as quiet as the other spot, but definitely more closed and a little darker. The other spot was right under the tree, that's the only thing I could think of that might be appealing.

I can try covering the door a little more, she might like that! But I dont want to mess with it too much today. I want to give her the chance to get a little more used to it.

Mine always choose a spot under a bush, or under some long dry grass or under a hedge...maybe you could chuck a load of hay over the little house? Or chop the tree down and drape it over the front? (only kidding)

The things you do for your birds eh? LOL

Actually, Trina took to it! She covered up the eggs I left in the "new" nest and laid another! We've been watching her all morning, she's taking bits of straw and feathers from around her yard and placing them in the house. Guess she just needed some guidance?

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great news!! Last year my goose had a spot where she hid behind a propped up wheelbarrow, the funny thing is I thought she was a gander! My other goose would stand look out while the other maud her egg. I didn't know she was behind the wheelbarrow and kept wondering why Ellie kept hanging around that area! Finally I looked behind and there was Lucy with an egg! I was not ready for eggs! I was excited that Lucy was a goose and excited she laid an egg! I took the egg and placed it in the goose house. I will never forget her face that day she looked up at me as if to say, what is this big white thing? LoL!
