Toulouse Geese Thread

I feed the wild birds too but I just don't want them anywhere near me. Especially when they fly into the windows with a "BANG!!!"sends me into panic mode with the irrational thought of "omg they are trying to get me and my eyes!" I know there not but the mind does stran he things when it's thrown into sudden fear. I've loved geese since I got my first pair which happened to be toulouse when I was about 12 years old. So excited to have babies again!!! Lol

Sounds like one too many Hitchcock films. We had a woodpecker hit our dining room window the other day and drop to the ground. I ran out, picked it up and was sure it was dead. I was walking out to the field with it in a box to bury it and all of a sudden it jumped up on the side of the box and took off flying.

whew that was close. We've had birds do that too, some make some don't always sad when they don't.

Tsumo I'm excited for you on getting your Toulouse. I too am waiting for my 2 pr. of the Giant Dewlap Toulouse from Holderread. They are due around May 4th. I'm in the process of building them a duck coop. There's so much information on this site and I need all the help I can get. I've never raised geese before, but have raised Guinea Fowl for years now. The guineas have a 8Wx20Lx8'H open air coop, which I built. I'm making the duck coop 8Wx20Lx6'H. The dewlaps don't need the height like the guineas do. They free range all day and then perch in their coop at night (safe as a bug in a rug). Please take picture's of your new goslings, I'd love to see them. Good luck.

You all are in for a real treat. I have three Toulouse (one male two females) that are about a year old now and are laying eggs, building nest and (once this freeze passes) hopefully will be sitting and hatching soon. I had never had geese before (except when I was a little boy and it had more to do with flapping and biting) so I did not really know what to expect. They are smart, friendly, calm and beautiful. Right now the hormones are flowing in the Gander due to mating season and he has become agressive toward any and everything, me included. But, that will pass once breeding season passes...unless of course he has little ones to protect. One of these days he is going to get me though I am sure.

Post pictures when your geese arrive. We love pictures of other peoples geese.

Yes, I'm really excited! I'm not sure if I will put a pool in their coop. I've been researching that too. That's something I can always add on later. Right now, they will stay in the house. I have 2 spare bedrooms w/no furniture. I also have 2 water troughs that sprung a leak. I will disinfect and rinse out really well, put some shavings and a light and they should be comfy. I ordered them for May, 'cause it should be warmer and they should do well in transit, I hope. Does anyone know if Holderread hatches the eggs or does he let the goose do it?

While you will not NEED a pool for your geese you will need a source of water that is deep enough for them to complete dip their heads into to clean their nares and to assist with preening. If you have a male and female to breed you will want at least a small pool for them as they do better breeding in water than on land. Also, geese love to bathe so eventually you might want at least a kiddie pool for them to splash about in.

Thank you, yes on enough water for them to dunk their heads. I was thinking of a heavy water trough, like the Tuff, about 2' high with a drain that's about 150 gal.. I won't be able to buy any filters or such this year, but I'll be able to do that next year. I thought instead of a baby pool, I'd get the pool that I plan on using without a filter. Just buying the pool once and not wasting money on a pool they'd only use for a couple months plus save my back. LOL I do have some small pans that they can use for now, a couple of NEW kitty pans, and NEW feed buckets, for dunking heads. Right now I'm doing a lot of reading on the geese site. It is so informative, I love it. Everyone expressing their experiences, good and bad, is so helpful to all us newbies. Thanks again

My goose and ducks over the kids little pool this last summer. But they didn't like the big pool that they could actually swim in. They didn't like their feet not touching the ground! Lol silly things.

My Toulouse goose laid her first egg today inside the duck house instead of her own. haven't been able to get it yet she is still getting over it. lol
