We have had 2 Toulouse Goslings and I'm feeling like the worst caretaker in the world right now. We have a male and a female and they have both started hobbling around on one knee! I'm so upset. I just switch their feed to a feed with higher manganese percentage. That's what I was told to do with geese that start to show symptoms of perosis. I was re-filling their feed today and the female has COMPLETELY lost the use of the lower half of her left leg. It's almost like part of her leg is paralyzed. They are about a month and a half old and I'm worried that we'll have to put them down. HELP PLEASE!!!

What are you feeding them for their basic feed? Are you giving them lots of greens? Lettuce chopped, Dandelion greens etc. And adding brewers yeast to their grain will also be important.

I had them on chick starter but I recently switch to a layer feed because I was told to lower the amount of protein and increase the amount of manganese. I couldn't find any water fowl feed with manganese in it. I let them out a few hours a day and they eat fresh grass and weeds and things. I will try putting lettuce in.

One big problem that goslings can get is niacin deficiency. brewer´s Yeast has niacin in it, also romaine lettuce, also peas have a good amount in. Niacin deficiency causes death, and starts with them having problems walking. Fast and early treatment gets them back on their feet fairly quickly. That could be the problem.

Thank you! I gave them a big bowl-full of lettuce and they gobbled it down. I will give them crushed peas tonight and get some brewers yeast the next time I'm in town. Thanks very much!

I would suggest giving a B complex, choline, and manganese. Perosis is much more complex than just niacin. I would also manually check the tendon and if it is out, work it back into place....that maybe need to be done a few times per day. Water therapy after alignment will help.

How do I work it back into place?
Feel the other leg and see the difference then very gently move the tendon in the other leg till they both feel the same . I'm thinking a warm bath before and after may help before because the muscles and tendon will be relaxed and hopefully easier to maneuver . after just because it will feel so good.

Periods? Niacin is vit N3, Perosis seems to br caused by deficincy of vit B3, vit B9, bit b12, manganese, and choline.
