Toy rant, why does everything have someone on it?

I absolutely and utterly refuse to purchase "character" stuff. My family knows that children (and the adults) will receive either books, some item handmade, or art-making supplies from me. My grown children know I'm true to that because they never got character or licensed items, either.

Nope - not in this lifetime.

What sends my brain for a loop is to turn on the Discovery channel, or something like it, and see kids in third world countries wearing these character clothes. It's a like a sneaky virus creeping across the face of the planet. These kids can't even speak English, they don't have T.V.s and I can pretty well guarantee you they don't know who Hannah Montana is. You can't even go to the ends of the Earth to get away from this trash!

I've started the dress up trunk idea for my 2 oldest grandpunkins. I got halloween dress up clothes for $3.22 each. I intentionally looked for items that didn't have the disney characters on them and when they did, I took them off and replaced them with plain buttons, bows, etc. They are only 3 years old, but I got size 4 to 6X. Before Halloween a lady on freecycle gave away a big bag of dress up items that were her daughters and we were lucky enough to get those as well.

My Granny and Mom used to make me dress up clothes out of old petticoats, prom dresses, etc. You can get them fairly reasonably at Goodwill and there is enough fabric on them to make several. If I wasn't working full time and had the time, I'd sew them myself, but alas, I work 45 hours a week and we are remodeling our home, so no time to sew right now.

And, why is it that you can find cute girl clothes without problems, but you can't find boy clothes that don't have those big plastic logos stuck on them somewhere. Plain is just so much better!

As a preschool teacher, part of my job is to play with 3 year olds! A lot of these are really basic, but some of these kids are in preschool over 40 hours a week and they're never bored!

Here are some of the things that are golden:

- Prop boxes! We have those plastic storage containers for dress up, but they're themed. For example, we have over-sized straw hats, overalls, big red hankies, etc in the farmer box; we have giant sunglasses, boas, purses, and big belts in the movie star box. They're super easy and it helps the kids "try on" different roles. Everything for these was purchased at thrift stores or the dollar store.

- Puppets! They're at an age where they're really starting to develop their ability to pretend. We make puppets out of paper bags (there are tons of books and websites online to this effect) and we have some "real" puppets on hand. Make a puppet stage out of a cardboard box.

- Blocks or legos. My favorites are the wooden kind of blocks with letters on them. We have them in a box and we only take them out at "special" times. It gets them excited enough to endure all of the "find me the red R"s. You can also teach them to spell simple words this way.

- Wooden wagons. There's an endless amount of things you can pull around with you. You can even get an unfinished one and paint it yourselves, like we did
