Well I decided to call the tractor supply store that didn't get their chick shipment yesterday due to the storm and low and behold...They had Buff Orpingtons!

They are a little further away than I would have like to drive but hey, we are talking about chickens here I might travel all the way across the country to get some

I'll have to post some pics when I get them.

I was planning to see if I could order through TSC and I was told I had to buy a full twenty-five and it would be sent to my house instead of there.  I was like, "WHy bother going through the middle man then?"  You think that I could have gotten just a few of a certain breed that way but I found that it has something to do with the hatchery that mine uses.  They make them buy certain numbers of each breed so I guess they just pass on the policy.

The minimum number has to do with shipping, so you'll get live chicks. And many make each breed be in multiples of 5s. I've heard that ordering through TSC gets you a faster ship date because contractually, they guarantee those breeds' availability to TSC during chick days.

I don't buy that since it would be better on the chicks if TSC was ordering a 100 chicks to sell in the store to just add my 3 or 4 of a different breed in with them instead of making me buy 25. Putting the 3 or 4 in with the 100 would still keep them warm during shipping. Forcing people to add a full twenty-five when they want to buy just a few makes less sense than TSC insisting that folks must buy at least six in areas where owning more than three is illegal.

As for the hatchery forcing the purchase of five per a breed, don't get me started on that nonsense.

Not true. I already had a ship date for April but I figured that if I could get them sooner through TSC I'd just cancel my order. The date that I was given IF I chose to go through them wouldn't be until AFTER my original order was to come in. And this was back in February when Chick Days first started in the area.

You know chicks need heat, yes? There's a reason hatcheries ship by full, half, or corner.

No one is saying you have to order through TSC. Do whatever you want.

{And when I went and looked at ordering online through the hatchery that ended up filling my order, it was a later ship date. Fwiw; ymmv. There was one hatchery out of the 3 that TSC uses that didn't even offer my breed selections.}

Not to mention- TSC is not going to pick pick out chicks for customer orders- that's ridiculous. My TSC also told me that corporate orders chicks well in advance of chick days, which is another reason onsies twosies can't be added in- the order was placed months ago.

Our local TSC will order any breed you want if you pay up front for all 50 of them. Their reasoning is if you want a breed they don't already get, they may not be able to sell the extras you leave at the store.

Something else stupid they do????? They only sell their chicks in groups of 6. You cannot buy 8 chicks or 10 chicks! Groups of 6 ONLY! So you leave the store with 6, 12 or 18 chicks. Unless you are me since I will never buy chicks from them again.

Oh, want a rare breed chicken? They had green laced wyandottes this year. ROFLMAO

That is not true at least at our yes there is a minimum of 6 but you can by 7,8,or 9 whatever as long as you purchase at least 6.

In Elizabethtown KY TSC and the one in Leitchfield(where we live) its six+ for chickens and two+ for ducks. . My first round I walked out with 14 chicks, then the other one six more. With the ducks bought those in sets of 4.. One time in Warren Ohio I got away with 5.

I got two Buff Orphingtons this morning and 4 assorted Bantams for my six chicks. Brought them home and one Buff is 'not so Buff' so I went back and bought just 2 more Buffs so I can hopefully add 2 hens to my flock when all is said and done. All but the one are very friendly and bouncy. Just hoping I don't lose the one Buff and that it doesn't get the others sick in case it has something. I hate to cull till I give them a chance to pull through.
