You do have the advantage of knowing they have arrived alive and are eating/drinking as well as not deformed. On the other hand I have observed kids and well-meaning people manhandling the poor things--"Oh they are so cute!!!"--so you don't know what trauma or internal injuries they have suffered.

Sometimes, feed stores will act as a "middle man" between customers and the hatchery. That might be what the order form is for -- something above and beyond what they will be carrying in-store so that you can have a custom order. You should be able to find out which hatchery the feed store orders from.

I bought my bantam chicks at TSC last year. The bantam bin was a mix of mostly games from what I could tell, but I was able to pick out 6 Mille Fleur D'Uccles, and there was 1 silkie in there. They got theirs from Mt. Healthy hatchery, but it depends on where you are. As far as the order form, you can order chicks through the store. The place they normally get their "chick days" chicks from, is where yours will come from. If you're going to order though, you're better off just ordering on your own, and direct shipping, instead of having them go to the store.

I bought my first 7 chicks from Tractor Supply last summer from the "assorted pullets" group. They had only been in the store an hour or so and I wound up with 4 of the 7 being roosters.

Yeah, someone else mentioned the torture the chicks go thru with everyone handling them. They suggested getting to the store as soon as it opens to get first pick.

Are the baby chicks separated (males/females)? ...do they sell bantam size pullets or just straight run?
I'm new to all of this and I noticed the hatcheries sell bantams as straight run.

The local one sells the large breeds either sexed or straight run. Bantams chicks are tough to sex so most places won't guarantee.
