Oddly enough, the receipt is on my refrigerator still!

Purchased 4/5/13 - each chick was $4.00 each. I got Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Ameraucana which was really an Easter Egger, and a Delaware. Also picked up a pint of Corid liquid for $17.19.

One of the Buff Orpingtons was really a Buff Rock. One had yellow legs, one had pink legs. I didn't notice it until they were about 2 months old [DUH!].

They always look healthy there. Our TSC in NJ just mentioned that they are now looking at March for chick days due to our fold weather. They require a 6 chick min. They are trying to prevent the lookie loos from buying 1 or 2 and sending those chicks to certain death.
I live in Texas. I think Chick Days might come early since its getting warmer! But Texas weather is unpredictable. I hope it comes early, I'm going to get the supplies and food. I PROMISE I'm not going to treat them bad or be one of those "It's not cute anymore, so I don't want it" people. I was just wanting to know peoples experiences. I am going to get ten or more just incase something happens. I am getting the brooder set up today, maybe it will come early!

I've been happy with all the chicks I bought from tsc. The one near our house is getting them at the end of this month.
I just bought some from Family Farm and Home the other day. They only have two breeds in so far hut I'm going to go back each wek when they get more in.

I think you are smart to find a local seller! This is an option most people don't think about but there are a lot of people (like me) who LOVE to incubate
eggs from their own flock. Just look at how many people post on the incubating thread. But most of us don't need to keep all the chicks we hatch. I only keep 3 or 4 new birds
a year but I hatched close to 200 last year. When you buy from local sellers you know your chicks are healthy and you can see the condition of the parent birds. You don't have to deal with shipping stress and pasty butt. Usually the newborns aren't sexed tho and that would be a problem for those of you who aren't allowed to have roosters.

Good sources for local birds are Craig's List, newspapers and swap shops. Also feed stores usually know who has chicks for sale.

We bought our first chick ever from them last year. I was not sure what the breed was and they gave me the email for their supplier who readily identified the breed for me. Our girls are still laying every single day and are a true joy! We bought 12 because folks said we would lose some - did not lose any!!! The folks at Tractor Supply here in Columbia have been and continue to be incredibly helpful and very knowledgable about chickens. We turn to them often. I do not doubt that some folks, somewhere, have not had good luck but TS - that is bound to happen from time to time but, in our estimation, they are truly exceptional in both customer service and knowledge!

As far as pasty butt or any other ailments goes, we had none. They are all females; all healthy; all good layers and very friendly girls. Because we have developed a relationship with the folks in our local store, I would not hesitate to buy from them again (and will).

I totally agree about the employees! I usually know a lot more about the chicks than they do. I've seen them swinging a washer on a string over a chick and then they swear it's a female. I know by the down color that it's NOT! I usually end up laughing after I leave the store because most of them are clueless.

What's the washer for? Sorry for my ignorance! Is it for telling the gender?
Could you explain to me how the color of the down can help sex the chicks?
