Tractor Supply Employee Knowledge About Chicks

The other thing I would LOVE to see the feed stores do is post a VERY LARGE poster with a list of equipment required and how to care for baby chicks, as well as an explanation of each of the breeds offered. No offense to any of the newbies on here, but I cringe when I hear of people who impulse buy when they go into the feed store and don't have a clue how to care for the chicks when they get them home. I did a TON of research -- I bought books and read literally hundreds of posts and information on this site -- before I even ordered my chicks.

Their is a list of equipment you need on the box.. but I agree... that is too late. I had a guy come in the other day and said he had 7 chicks and wanted to know if the chick-n-hutch was a good size for them. I told him no and he went on about how he is going to sell a few and keep 3 and I asked what kind... they were BRs and RIR and I said not really. He said "well, I will build them a run onto it and keep it open all the time" and I said it would work until he got something else bigger built but it shouldn't be perminant. So then he tells me he will only keep two and have it open all the time.... he was saying whatever he had to say to get me to sell it to him. It was obvious.

So as much as a employee can try... some people who should not have pets will get pets anyways. and all the information in the world won't stop them from doing it "their way".

I had another couple who I loaded up with waterers and feeders and feed and information and heat lamps and all... the husband got POed and said "we never had all this stuff whenI was growing up. This is just them trying to make a sale" And sincerely... I only got them the absolute basics. Even told them a cardboard box was fine for a couple weeks. So it wasn't like I was selling them a metal tub.

Since when do layers NOT lay eggs? Is that like the same thing as them not living past 8 weeks old?

Are you seriously suggesting that they should have sold them to a man who wanted to have a production egg flock? REALLY!?!?

I am not suggesting that at all. I just asked a question.

Don't forget the "Bantanas"...

The kid at our TSC said his aunt had Anaconda's and they lay colored eggs. I couldn't bring myself to correct him as I was holding back the laughter.

Their is a breed poster next to the chicks (in my store) and it is basicly the info you get out of a hatchery catalog for each breed. HOWEVER, the breeds get mixed up alot because people let their kids pick them up and put them down wherever. Let's face it, some people wouldn't DO the training if they had to... they would click to the end or whatever it takes to say they done it and forget about it.
I did get the over population problem fixed though... last year I didn't work there and their was canniblism going on bad. This year they asked me why they do that... I told them they had them too cramped and the heaters way too close. Fixed! This year no dead chicks and no body eatting anyone else.

I get more fightened for the ducks than the chicks. The minimum is two and alot of people have at least two grandkids begging for duckies. And ducklings take far more work than chicks if done right.

The store I'm referring to has such a generalized post that it's impossible to tell which ones are in the bins. Also, they had all the same kind of chicks together(ex;all glw's in the same bin) but had them labeled as possible...Amberlinks,White Leghorns,Golden Comets and something else....but NO GLW's!! I also get frightened for the ducks...especially this time of year when people irresponsibly buy them for easter

and then "let them free to live as a wild duck".Too bad local T.V. stations don't forwarn about what that does to the ducks. Maybe it would help some....
