Tractor Supply Orpington Pullets

I’m guessing the yellow one is a buff but I’m not sure that the red one is an Orpington at all. Any guesses?

The red one is a Rhode Island Red chick. I've raised and hatched several, and it definitely looks like one for sure!
And yes, the yellow one is a Buff Orpington.

That explains her standoffishness. I’ve only had one RIR in the past and it wasn’t very friendly. Bummer.

Not all RIR's are unfriendly. I have a Buff/RIR cross rooster, he's the best rooster I've ever owned. I find that RIR's can be more aggressive towards other birds, and they like to pick on Polish crests I've heard as well.
It depends more on the bird then the breed, don't write her off yet.

That's how mine always were to start off with, but my RIR hens are actually really friendly! If you spend lots of time with her as she's growing up, you may have a nice RIR!!

I totally agree!!!!

I had a pure, huge RIR roo, and he was AMAZING!! And my RIR hens that I still own are as friendly as my Buff Orpingtons!

I meant to mention- I kept 2 RIR hens out of the batch that I hatched out this Spring, and they are the friendliest chickens I own, they come up to me and want me to pick them up all the time- seriously!!!

SO cute! My rooster is the best flock protector ever. I've had hawks almost pick up my ducks twice. The chickens were never at risk because Sam immediately led them into the bushes, and wouldn't bring them out until he was sure the danger was gone. He's the best!

Aww! Happy to hear that! They're such great protectors!
I miss my ol' Samson. But he had to go because I never really had any luck with selling RIR chicks. So I sold him to move on to breeding, hatching and selling other breeds with higher demand.
Samson went to a really great home tho (he also went with his son. ) to free range with lots of girls!
