Tractor/trailer coop build

Sorry about the green fencing obscuring the view. They’re excavating!

It’s not even really dust-bathing. They’re just digging for the coolness.

Ruff nite panting in the coop, they seem happy and active today. One more afternoon on baking heat, and we get a break, maybe even some rain for the garden.

Kentucky beefsteak and a shot of the ladies. No intentions to introduce a rooster

Wow, did they trash the coop, the five days they were in there. What a huge difference when they poop all day in the run.

And. No more food and water in the coop either. Much better now.

These chickens are a pleasure, hope they have a good life here on the stead.

Chilling after breakfast

The girls are 16 weeks today. This is what they have been eating for 6 weeks. Little to no treats, just a few mealworms and blueberries once a week. All seems good, but one bird may have some loose dark stool.

I am wondering if now is the time to offer free grit and oyster shell. No one is laying this early.

I always have grit available. The birds I have eat oyster shells when they need it, so I always have that out too.

I’ve been focusing on all things chicken, but not obsessing over when the eggs will begin, and if it will go well.

Well today one of the barred rocks started sqwauking for all to hear, after preparing a place to lay. I saw her struggling a bit with some shallow shavings, so when she left the coop, I piled up some fresh shavings, and she went in dug a nest and laid our first egg since 2010.

Grateful for the chickens, and most appreciative to all here that help out so much.

Nice little pullet egg, yum
