Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

Thanks for the tips on how to say it all. Yep, the rooster is mounting and covering. And since these last posts, I've also checked a couple of the eggs since he's been in the coop with the hens. They have the blastoderm on them now. I have several in the hovabator, and will try candling after a few more days.

I suppose I should learn to be more direct when I write. Euphemisms create confusion, to be sure, but clear language offends some folks as well. One never knows how far to go, especially online when it is so easy to hurt feelings.

No worries. Chicken-folk tend to be earthy and direct :). As long as you are talking chickens, I think you'd be hard-pressed to offend people here. Good to hear your rooster is doing his job!

Update for my hatch: My old incubator sucks, I hate it, and wish I could drop it off a cliff. Alas I lack a cliff, so my only vengence for it's recent murder spree of my hatch is to relegate it to the garage. I opened the two Whole Foods eggs that I ws trying to hatch, and they both had viable yellow chicks in them that were killed by a temp spike. Grr.

On a positive note: behold my new incubator!!

Inside are 11 more Whole Foods eggs!! I set them on Tues. with the New Years Day Hatchalong. Due on New Years!

OOOOH a brinsea 20 , is that an advance I see....
So jelous.
I got a mini eco all i could aford and it had a fualty circut bored , now that thats fixed though it holds temps 99.0 when my house gets really cold at night and 100.0 when my house is to warm and a perfect 99.5-99.7 when Im not bakeing or freezing it , I was a little surprised by this as it has so little insulation but it just hums along .
I only had 3 out of 6 hatch this time 6 made it to lock down but Im pretty sure it was something I did , Humidity issues maybe as I dont have a humidity moninter in there as my only one is to large to fit , the only draw back to the brinsea mini is that its a tight fit in there lol.
I cant wait to hear about your eggs. I wish my stores sold fertel eggs I have checked every carton and even the organic vegetarin free range ect eggs arnt fertel ones.

Yes it is ^_^. I am really shocked at how well it holds temp too! Seriously, after my stupid Hovabator, which I piled towels on, put heatsinks in, etc, I'm so off-kilter with such a low-maintenance incubator that actually does it's job! I'm still getting way too much fun out of rocking it onto it's side to rotate the eggs too. Probably the same feeling toddlers get playing with their sippy cups :p.

I set off a selection of 24 eggs. 12 were Trader Joes other 12 came in the mail from a breeder. We have a total of 12 eggs looking like they are developing. 7 of those are Trader Joes. It's day 14 so looking good. Will keep you posted.

Tuesday I went to Trader Joe's in Hillcrest (San Diego) when they opened because someone told me that this was one of the stores which carried the fertile eggs..but they didn't have anything close and when I inquired they really looked at me as if I were nuts and said they didn't think they carried them. I went to Sprouts (Henry's) Farmer's Market and also went to Whole Foods...I struck out at all three...Perhaps the person who recommended I go to trader joes just assumed they had the fertile eggs here...Im not sure..Does anyone have an idea about San Diego or a way of finding out for certain whether or not whole foods or Sprouts might have them? I was so disappointed after the 3rd store..I guess I was a little over confidant they would have them here.

I am doing an egg run to san diego on the 22. If you want to meet up as I pass through, I can bring you a couple of dozen from orange couunty

If I get some luck with these homegrown eggs from our flock, I'm going to try some Whole Foods eggs. I think I'm off the TJ's at least for this round!

My eggs are hatching after all! They started yesterday afternoon (day 23!) and are still at it this evening! Momma is still sitting on them. Hopefully I will get a better look tomorrow.
