After two weeks, no luck on my 24 TJ's eggs. Candling showed all of them clear and not changing. I cracked open a few and saw no evidence of embryos at all. Wound up opening all of them after checking. Not a one ever started growth. But it did teach me the basic hovabator operation, which was what I wanted. I set some from my hens yesterday and am hoping for luck now. I checked one Friday and saw the fertile disc on the yolk. Hopefully, I'll have some chicks after Christmas.

Lots of fun!

I contacted Chino Valley Ranchers - the suppliers of eggs to TJs in SoCal

They said the public may purchase eggs from their Arcadia office directly.

I will set a dozen of them and see the difference.
7 days are about as fresh as you're gonna get there (well I think someone found them at 4 days old, but still, those are quite fresh) IF they're fertile, they should do great. I had great fertility myself, so I'd try the ones you bought before getting more (unless you would rather eat them?) Good luck!

I'm really surprised none of them developed! You know TJ's has 2 egg cartons that look very much alike. One is the free range, and the other is the fertile eggs, they say fertile on them... Just wondering if maybe you inadvertently got the free range eggs?

I checked the carton again. Sure said "fertile." Next time I try, I'll go ahead and crack a couple first to check! I have eggs in now from my flock, and I've seen the fertile spot on several of these. Looks like the rooster is ready to go!

Today should have been hatch day for me. I closed my run in anticipation (did not want a bunch of babies loose in the yard). When I got home from work all the chickens escaped from the run and none had gone back in, including mama. The eggs are stone cold and not a single pip. I am devastated :(

Mamma sat back down on them after I let all the birdbrains back in the coop. I went out and candled a few hours later and did see movement in a few. there was more of an airspace than I was expecting to see at this stage so maybe my dates were off, though I counted 3 times. Do these eggs take a little longer to get going since they have been refrigerated? My hopes are not high but hopefully some of them will make it.

Thanks. My question was more simple. I have a 5-month old rooster that has been raised with his four sisters. He's been doing Bible knowledge activities with them for at least 3 weeks. I moved the five of them over to the bigger coop that has 2 red stars (consistent layers) and two Americaunas (goldbrickers so far).

He's already chasing the new girls. Assuming he's not still loading the pistol biologically, how long should it be before the Red Stars are laying fertile eggs? I'd like to gather a half-dozen or so and get them in the hova-bator.
Maybe because I am a nurse but we are talking about chickens. Using euphemisms creates confusions. does "doing bible knowledge" mean mounting or covering, or having Sunday School? I have no clue what loading the pistol means. I am guessing Viagra in the roo's water.

I do not mean to be harsh, just would like to help.

I am shocked by the TJ eggs I got.

I bought them Saturday. WHen I got home I realized that they were 12 days old. I threw them in th bator anyway - I figured as they are white, I could document development earlier. To my surprise I can see veins growing in many of them. I prolly have 16 of 24 looking like they want develop. Not bad for chilled old eggs.

Thanks for the tips on how to say it all. Yep, the rooster is mounting and covering. And since these last posts, I've also checked a couple of the eggs since he's been in the coop with the hens. They have the blastoderm on them now. I have several in the hovabator, and will try candling after a few more days.

I suppose I should learn to be more direct when I write. Euphemisms create confusion, to be sure, but clear language offends some folks as well. One never knows how far to go, especially online when it is so easy to hurt feelings.
