Hi Carrie,
I think i have 6 roosters and 5 hens. They are crowing like teenagers. I hsve 2 or so thst are pure white, the rest have varrying levels of random black feathers but seen to have alot of brown coming in too. Im currently im TN but will snap a photo tomorrow

I bought some fertile eggs from a whole food store, they are Nature's Yoke brand. They are XLarge rich brown eggs. I set them on Thursday morning, wish me luck!!

Update on my original 12 TJ eggs, 4 had been discarded on Day 5 as non-starters (I verified, the white spot looked like they had never been fertilized.) Yesterday was Day 10 and I discarded a blood ring, which leaves 7 under my broody.

This blood ring was hard to see in the coop, which is why I left it so long. I think the ring became more pronounced as the days went by but it really showed up well in my dark bathroom after I removed it from the coop. Upon inspection, the embryo was either covered by yoke or too small for a newbie like me to spot, so I'm guessing it died much earlier.



All the rest look very dark. My LED flashlight that I use for candling is pretty weak so it's hard to see details (I looked it up and I think it's only 29 lumens. There are others on Amazon that have high settings for 200 and over.) I'm hoping dark means a working circulatory system = alive.

6 TJ eggs left @Day13, removed another egg that looked suspicious 2 days ago but this morning found no veining and a dark sloshy blob. I removed, candled in a dark room and verified it looked quite clear, then broke it open with much trepidation... luckily it didn't stink but it was clearly dead with no vascularization. I felt a wave of nausea as I slid the contents out. (what a wimp huh).

The weird part is it looks like 2 embryos (only one yoke I think). What do you think? see the 2 dark spots, one larger than the other? I wonder if that's why it didn't make it.
