Ok so.... I'm talking to myself here

, but I want to announce that I set the eggs tonight. The were room temperature for a while, so instead of waiting 12 - 24 hours, I just stuck 'em in. Is the reason for waiting just so that they don't end up with condensation all over them? If that's the case, I'm sure mine will be fine. That is if they are viable.

Anyway, I candled them first thing and found 3 with air bubbles that moved and one with what looked like something dark floating around (broken yolk?) So I only set 8 eggs that looked good. The others I'll eat

, and when I crack them open, I'll tally up how many of the 4 had a bulls-eye and get an idea of what the fertility rate was???

Well, it'll give me practice for when i get me pretties

I'm reading, so your not talking to yourself. We are fINALLY getting a TJ's in a few days so I may have to try this. 30 miles one way, but still.....

LOL, just joking around

Oops, this morning I woke up to a very dry incubator and it was too warm! I closed the holes off because the temperature tends to go down so much at night, but this morning it was 102.4 degrees and only 19% humidity! Hope I didn't kill 'em already! I fixed 'em up right away and hopefully it wasn't like that for long (hotter- this morning than it has been, figures it would be right on time with August first!

Ah well, that's why I'm doing this, to see if I can keep the home made 'bator within range enough to hatch eggs! LOL

I tried getting some from a local store that only sells local produce/meat/eggs. We grabbed "fertile free range" eggs that were deep dark brown. NONE of them were fertile. I feel like it was false advertisement. The store thought I was nuts when I called and notified them that out of a whole dozen none were fertile and that I feel ripped off. They asked how I would know. When I said I checked a few tried to incubate some (leap of faith on those ones) NOTHING happened. Dogs ate well at day 10 from the 8 I put in the incubator.
All is not lost. As I knew if this happened I'd be very upset and feel like I was running the incubator for nothing I put in eggs from my moms chickens as well. They are going good. store bought eggs didn't work. I will however try trader joes next summer IF i get a broody hen out of this years chicks. I got silky mix's. I hear they are very broody. Plus my older pullet actually puts her wings over the chicks that are 4 weeks younger. She also clucks at me if I get to close to the babies. Going to try to put the new hatched chicks under her in 10 days. we'll see if she's truely a broody pullet

Well, I have 4 eggs I didn't incubate still in the fridge, and I may have 2 for lunch (I'm a cereal eatter in the mornings, LOL) and when I crack 'em open, I'll see if they have the fertile bulls-eye??

Those 4 I didn't put in had broken air sacks.

Belated congratulations on your little cotton balls, cotton! LOL. There are several breeds with 5 toes, not just Silkies, just so you know and won't be disappointed

Thanks! What other breeds have 5 toes? I've only ever heard of silkies having them. Oh, and the chicks are doing great! Looks like we got one boy and one girl, and based on the tail that is growing in on the girl I'd bet money that one parent was a leghorn.

Yeah, I got them from a farmers market in St. Louis. They came from a farm in Washington, MO. I'm gonna have to guess that since they don't have pompadours, but they do have feathered legs, their papa was a Faverolle. Thanks for the info!

Well, I just ate 2 out of the 4 eggs I pulled out of my hatching group due to loose air sacks, and had them for a late night snack

and they had very clear bulls eyes! I'm very happy, as I figure it's indigative of the fertility of those in the box

2 more to eat and hopefully they will also be fertile, giving me even more confidence in my eggs. If they don't hatch, I will place blame firmly on my technique

well, guys i am starting out with an experiment that i don't believe will work but i will see.i took 4 eggs from two different Walmart brands of eggs ones about 3-4 weeks old and ones about ten days.So i put them in my homemade incubator and i am hoping for the best!!!!
