Ok....I am soooo super excited! My son and I took a trip yesterday to the next state over to do some school clothes and other misc. shopping...I happen to drive by the Whole Foods Market. Well I went in and was checking out the eggs...my incubators are running now and I am expected some more eggs to be shipped on Monday..so what harm would a few more do right? Well as I was standing there looking through the eggs I see a sign that says "I am local!" I found some eggs that come from local farmers just up the road. Woot Woot. Brown eggs...my guess is they are RIR or a hybrid. I bought a dozen and then a six pack of another free range organic...they are white..look like white leghorn eggs. Well we got home and I cracked open two of the white eggs...they do not appear to be fertile. Tried the brown ones...they were sold in six packs as well...one from each pack. One was fertile, one was not. So I want to just go ahead and set all the brown ones. Don't think I will bother with the white ones.

So for those of you who have set the bought eggs...do you give them some time to settle? I drove them home this afternoon...about 200 miles. They are now just sitting on my counter, but still feel cool. Should I let them sit over night and put them in the incubator tomorrow morning, or just give them a few more hours to "warm" up to my room temp tonight?

I'm probably too late to answer, but I would let them sit out to room temp at least 12 hours :)

Tomorrow morning I'm putting my eggs on lockdown!!! Yaaay! A few hours early because I'm going shopping all day, LOL, but don't think that's a problem ;P

I'm kind of worried. I don't have time to candle the eggs tomorrow, so I just did it and they look fine except one looks like it's not as far along as the others?? Weird, I wonder when it'll hatch?

Hey there. My name is Selina. I've been trying to break my broody hen for a week and she's not budging. So, I decided to go get her some fertile eggs and put under her. I am not sure what I am doing but I think my Jersey Giant will enjoy sitting on these eggs. The Enjoy by date is 9/5 which is my birthday. They should hatch about the 7th or so (I think). My hen seems happy to be sitting on the clutch of eggs. She's pecking when I try and check on things.

wait... am I to understand the eggs that Trader Joe's sells are fertile? Whats more is that they actually hatch? Oh wow this is unreal.

LOL, yah! Trader Joes on the west coast at least, sells fertile eggs (sold as fertile) basicallly because us dingle brains in California have decided that fertile eggs are healthier for you (they're not any different, but Californians are on the eternal lookout for the fountain of youth or something)

anyway... you might find them all the way up there in Washington, as, sorry to say, we're kinda related (lots of Californians have infiltrated your lovely state)

I think some have found them for sale up there??? Look for the cartons that say they're free range and fertile

Well I decided that they just felt too cool to put them in the incubator last night. So I let them just rest over night. They are going in now. Who knows what will happen. I can't find any date on the packages, so who knows how long they have been sitting in that cooler.

I will keep you posted. Oh...btw, my husband thinks I am nuts and a step away from being admitted to a ward somewhere! Guess I should just keep all these crazy things here on BYC and in my head and not share them with him.

LOL, my hubby LOVED the idea, and is the one who bought the eggs for me ;P

Ugh, I thought that once I hit lockdown, the difficult part would be over, but my incubator is having a difficult time keeping humidity above 70% So I'm spritzing through a hole (away from the eggs) every hour! Ugh!!! Can't wait for these buggers to hatch! And I'm worried that in reality, they're at least a day behind normal, 'cause that one looked like it had so much room in it's egg still, and this is my first time... Gosh, I hope they live! We're all so looking forward to them!

So close, and yet so far!

LOL, well, depends on how much room you have? LOL.

Dang, now I'm so nervous! I think in the beginning, I didn't realize how much of a commitment I'd be making, but now, after devoting almost 3 weeks of my life to these eggs, I'm getting so anxious! Ugh!

Tell him your not nutz, your economical. Why buy eggs for $3 each when you can get a dozen for less then $2!
