Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

No, I didn't want to impose on her anymore than I already had, or worsen my crazylady image. I can only assume they were just checking out the inventory and seeing how fast their eggs were selling. I don't visit the store very often (expensive!), so I don't know if they were a new distributor.

I love the cartons though, they have printed envelope lables on them that states the farm name, address, and the packaging date! woohoo, they are only a week old!
Lucky . I want to try store eggs so bad but nothing around here sales them so far.

Last week after my failed attempt to find eggs at Trader Joe's, Sprout's Farmer's Market, and Whole Foods I was perusing their web pages and for the heck of it sent a note to Trader Joe's corportate office. It took them a few days but here was their reply:

Hello Matt,

Thank you for contacting us, and we do truly appreciate your inquiry. In response, we do indeed carry Large Grade AA Fertile Eggs (SKU 05648) in your local area stores, and they are priced at $2.99 for the dozen. So, we would recommend that you simply stop by and see your local store Captain for assistance with locating this product in your local store.

We do hope this information helps, and we thank you for shopping with us at Trader Joe's.

Sincerely,

Hazel

I have no idea why I had such rotten luck when I went the other day but I am going to print the message and take it in to the store sometime this week when I am getting groceries. I think I will send a message to Sprouts and Whole Foods as well and see if I get a response and if I do perhaps I'll share the information with the group and maybe it will be a means for determing for certain which specific stores carry or don't carry the fertile eggs.

I will let you know what I find out!

Sincerely,

Matt

Thanks for that.
I'll try my TJ store again where I was told they didn't know what I meant by fertile eggs.

I went to Whole Foods and got fertile eggs that were 14 days old.
I didn't open any to see if they were in fact fertile but it is now day 18 and they are all clear.
I had a chick hatch this morning from my eggs and it's egg was 15 days old when I set it.

...
Me: (nervous I look crazy now) "So.... what kinds of hens do you have?"
Lady: "Gold Comets mostly"
Me: "Me too! I love them. ...
That is cool.
I don't think they breed true so don't know what you'll end up with but probably still a good layer.
If you run into them again ask what breed their rooster is.

Oooo, what kind of chick hatched out of a Whole Foods egg?! Pictures!!! And FYI, the Trader Joe's in Brentwood does not have fertile eggs. I haven't checked the one in west county though.

I'm not certain of the breed. When I tried to hatch some last month, and my incubator killed the hatch, I did an eggtopsy. The chicks inside were developed enough to have yellow feathers. So I suspect that they have Red SLs

And you're right ChickenCanoe, SLs are a one time hybrid cross, they don't breed true. I will probably get a bunch of barnyard mutts. :)

Oops, I totally misread that. A chick hatched from your own eggs.

Hello Everyone, I have been so overwhelmed trying to read and keep up with the posts on the BYC NYD Hatch-Along I can't recall whether I shared my most recent update in the Grocery Store Egg Adventure. After spending an entire afternoon and making three futile visits and inquiries at the grocery stores thought to have fertile eggs in San Diego (TJs, Whole Foods, and Sprouts/formerly Henry's), I decided to see if I could save myself some time and gas and I went to the corporate web page, clicked on "Contact Us", and wrote a very short note:

Subject: Trader Joe's Product Information Form

“Could you please let me know where I can purchase fertile eggs? I generally shop at the trader Joes in Hillcrest but will travel to the nearest store if you will let me know.”

And to my surprise, just two days later I received the following:

And today, I received the following:

Good afternoon Matt,
Thank you for your inquiry. Great News! I have confirmed with the buyer that although we no longer carry these in the store, we can still source them. Please see the store manager to special order them for you. I hope this is encouraging news. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Happy Holidays and thank you for shopping at Sprouts.
Sincerely,

Just thought some of you might like to know it is possible to check the store’s without even leaving home! I am excited and plan on going to get eggs from these two as soon as the BYC NYD hatch is finished. By then maybe I’ll have heard from Whole Foods as well!!!
