So, I thought it might interest everyone here that I ended up processing my three Whole Foods roosters. I haven't weighed them yet, but at 9 to 10 weeks they were heavier than I expected.

It was my first time processing (though I've seen it done from growing up on the farm), and it went mostly well. My poor H had to be gone from the house because he's such a softie, and all of our chickens thus far have been pets.

Pele, I am with your hubby, pretty soft hearted. I have huge respect for folks who can process their own animals. My problem is that I am ok with dispatching animals if I don't know them, it's just more personal if you've raised them. Good on you for doing it yourself!

i only name the ones i will eat.

satay, kebab, adobo, sandwich, salad, potpie

it keeps it real

Funny, I can't even eat a chicken if I have to cut it up myself. Only eats boneless skinless here. I remember butchering as a kid on the farm with the folks and siblings. I ate many in my lifetime before I moved out on my own. If I have to cook a whole chicken it either goes in a pot for soup or a roaster with a lid on it. I've been offered fresh butchered chickens for hatching eggs from people and I pass. I know they are better for you but can't do it. I think about it to much. Same goes with eggs.. If they are hatchable they go into the incubator even if they were giving to me for eating.. LOL I have to say their must be some pretty old things out there that I have hatched because
No one is aloud to tell me that they have butchered something I've hatched for them, they just say I let it go in the wild and it's living happily in the woods! LOL

For anyone in the area, I found Fertile eggs at the Giant in Levittown PA. They were not kept with the regular eggs, go to Aisle two, organic section. Also checked out some of the organic eggs we got, called Egglands best cage free, and Organic Valley, both were no's for keeping roosters. Funny though I couldn't get a direct answer from three of the companies, reason is they distrubute through local farms so waiting on call back. So 10 Fertile eggs in incubator, along with six duck eggs fertile and for hatching...three of which were refridgerated 3 days, and six chicken eggs fertilized and for hatching...again three of which were refridgerated three days. Great way to connect with my teenager and get him thinking about things other than computers and video games.

Local town ordinance don't allow us to keep livestock, so we will be rehoming any hatchlings. He's already begging to keep one as a pet if they do indeed hatch.

Anyone ever hatch a regular old egg, I have a Hilldale farm one that seems to be developing! Just one of three.

Heehee, it just goes to show that you can't take the farm outta the girl. My husband is a city boy through and through, where I just live here until I can get back to the country.

I did feel very badly that I didn't have more personal experience, as I take the 'humane husbandry' thing seriously. Unfortunately I can't magic up finesse out of nowhere. I think I did alright for the most part though. I'll let you know how they taste, I'm thinking of cooking one up this weekend!
