Ok Hi everybody. I'm new here and just put 9 marketside/cal-maine eggs into my new incubator. They had been sitting on my counter since yesterday. Now that this experiment has started My Hands are shaking. The brown eggs that were in the carton varied from light brown to dark brown. I hope I hatch at least one chick.

I just cracked the three eggs left from the dozen I bought. Two had a bullseye. My question is probably stupid but is it possible they might have been the only two fertilized in the box? What do I look for on this first day after putting the nine in the incubator? Thanks.

Where the egg cartons marked as fertile?(sorry if you posted earlier that you were trying free range organic eggs).

Parthenogenesis will happen with chicken eggs--fertile without being fertilized. In chickens, most of the embryos will die within several days. It some other poultry, a chick will still develop and hatch.

The box didn't say free range specifically it did say cage free organic.A friend of mine said she had tried this with this brand (they are the same group that does Landolakes and egglands best) and ended up with some hatching.I do know there were two bullseyes guess I'll find out. LOL
But what do I look for today when I check them? I'm doing the dry method incubation.

look for veins on day 5 to 7. Sometimes you can see some sooner--around day three.

ok the Maran one smelled pretty bad...so i put in plastic bag in trash..the silkie was mildly off...so that is prob bad too right? i left in so far...trash??? i SORT of want to open? but then i don't want to know...should i? the two i put under the hen are doing great! next hatch? safeway rock island eggs included! i think they are RIR...which i prefer over like white leghorns...only because i am more into the LOOKs than the production....i have RIR before and liked them quite well...

If it smells bad I'd throw it out too. Even if it just smells bad because the egg next to it was oozing a bit there is too much of a chance that it got contaminated by the other egg. The only exception I would make is that I had an egg drip down onto another egg and when I threw it out the chick inside still looked good and was only a few days from hatching. I probably should have sprayed it down with hydrogen peroxide as well as the spot where the bad egg had been and then wiped it down and put it back in to see if it would hatch.

well i did throw out the Maran egg and that took care of the smell....i think. it was never super bad just off....i thought a silkie egg as well but it seems fine now...will watch it (with my nose!)....couldnt bare to throw it out just yet...tomorrow is lock down...will check tonight. thanks for info everyone!

I pulled these in and out of my fridge trying to decide to hatch them or not.
What hubby doen't know will not hurt him...

Yes!

It takes 21 days for eggs to hatch.

It should be no problem selling them but make sure they understand what straight run is. You will have boys hatch so you need to either sell them or have a plan for them.

If you are up to it, they are very tasty and surprisingly large for egg layer cockerels.

I would need to find them nearby homes--preferably good homes.I don't have the heart to eat supermarket chickens, let alone my pets.
