I could not find any threads on the issue so I'm asking
We are looking to start raising chickens
Not far from our property is a railroad crossing and the trains tend to lean on their horns.
How will the train noise effect the chickens?

No. Edit to say... sorry, I misread the question as will the train or whistle affect them.

At least if you get them as chicks. Otherwise it might for the first few times.

My chickens have shown an amazing ability to cope with and ignore mechanical noise -- even when we had tree work done and industrial-sized chipper was parked so close to their pen that I'd had to move the fence back to give the truck room.

After the initial startle they went about their usual business.

They also ignored ourhouse being put in -- though the California White decided that she absolutely HAD TO supervise the crew that was using the trencher for the electric and water lines.

The first hurdle for mine was the lawn mower. I stayed with them in the run the first two times and scratched around in the straw with my hands and completely ignored it. The third time I watched from the window and they eyeballed it at first, then went about their business as if nothing was going on. Now at 8 weeks old they could care less, and we have had to do other things like run chainsaws and weed eaters near the coop. We also have a really gung-ho fire dept that likes to run their siren in our residential neighborhood and they don't care about that either. I think they can get used to a lot of things, maybe even easier if you are close with them and teach them not to be concerned from a young age.
