x2. I also find it safer.I sure do like a round pen though...
Especially because it is so small. Easier for a bunch of training styles and not having to chase the horse all over.
No I've trained many a horse right out in the pasture .Is it possible to train a filly without a roundpen?
It really depends on the age and temperament of the horse and the skill of the trainer. I taught my colt to lunge without a round pen because we didnt have one. Too many people use a round pen for exercise... They should be used for specific instruction.... First time in a saddle. First time backing... (sitting in the saddle)Is it possible to train a filly without a roundpen?
Totally agreed. That's what I meant. Round pens are far safer for first ride, sacking out, etc.It really depends on the age and temperament of the horse and the skill of the trainer. In my opinion if you are going to use a round pen it should have walls incase of slip and falls.

Not a natural horsemanship invention.... Round pens have been around for a very long time Spanish Riding school for one.... I am sure Xenophon used something similar... in 354 BCAbsolutely. Roundpens were never a common training tool until the explosion of natural horsemanship. Yes, they can make portions of the training safer and faster but horses have been broke for 1000s of years without them.
