Transporting Chicks

Hi, Our coturnix babies should be hatching this weekend and we are to pick them up within 24 hours. What kind of "travel" arrangements should we make for them as far as keeping them safe? Warm? We have about a 40 minute drive home from where they are being incubated. Kristi

Hi,

You could try using a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to keep the chicks warm during the journey, and having the heater in the car on. I've delivered chicks like this in cardboard boxes with little effect on the chicks. Just make sure your brooder is right temperature when you get home so you can place them in straight away.

They also have the ice packs that can be hot or cold (the kind for injuries), that would probably work okay. You can get them in a pretty big size for only a couple dollars at walmart, or maybe you already have some in the freezer.

I have successfully transported them about the same distance in a small cardboard box with no additional heat. By small, I mean a box that is just big enough to confine them (with a small amount of room for movement) with just an inch or so above their heads. Close the top and they stay toasty.

40 minutes isnt anything severe at all. I'd just fill a trusty dusty ziplock bag (not the cheap ones lol) with warm water wrap a towel around it put that in a cardboard box, go to the breeders house, pick up the chicks and leave immediatly puttin ghtem in the cardboard box covering it compleltey with another towel and get your butt home they'll be fine
