I am a firm believer in compassion & kindness towards animals, but really, there is a line past which you stop applying The Golden Rule to your choices. Certainly I would not like reaching for a tasty-looking piece of cheese and having my neck broken by a spring-loaded bar of metal. But that doesn't stop me from setting snap-traps to catch & kill rats in my barn. And it would just spoil my day to be hung by my legs and have my neck arteries slit, but I still use this method to dispatch chickens for my table.
I don't trap predators & pests for fun, and do try my best to employ preventative measures so they're not so attracted to my place. But sometimes it's still necessary to have to trap the surplus. When that happens, I think the most compassionate thing to do is make their final hours/minutes as peaceful as possible, and find the way that works best for your situation. I think of it as the final kindness I can offer, as I do for the chickens I process, to dispatch them as quickly & efficiently as possible for their sakes.
