Tension on the trap pan is part of one to have success with using them, one must make sure there is plenty enough tension there to not fire so quickly, you will want an ideal weight of a certain animal and try to set the tension on the trap to force the animal to bare that weigh onto the trap pan to fire it off, some traps from factory are set so lightly you could drop a twig on them and they will fire. There is a small tool you can buy to help set tensions on traps. the dog and pan bolt are some ways used to set the trap pan tension and positioning of it..
