Trapping Coons- Best bait to use

We killed the possum but i think it's coons. Something is climbing on top of the pen and chewing the wire on top into and then getting down in there, killing chickens and climbing back out. So it can't be a fox or hawk or owl. I don't think the possum would be that resourceful.

The sardines really should do it. Raccoons pick through garbage, they'll eat just about anything. Let me tell you my first coon trapping story.

I remember trapping our first raccoon we were outsmarted by the thing repeatedly. We were still learning how to set the trap.

The first night, we had some venison scraps leftover, so we put a hunk of meat halfway between the push lever and the back of the trap. The coon reached over the lever, grabbed the meat, and got way.

Second night, we twist tied the piece of meat to the back wall of the trap. The coon untwisted the tie from outside trap to free the meat, went in, reached over the trip lever, and got another tasty morsel that night.

Third night, we staked the trap down with 6 tent stakes, and smeared peanut butter all over the ground and on the trip lever. The d@mm thing flipped the trap and licked the grass clean.

We finally got it by tying a piece of meat from the roof of the trap hanging down about 2 inches so it'd have to really get in there and mess with it to get it undone. Picture a twine ball around the piece of meat.

Just dig a hole then set the trap over top of the hole put the bait in the hole before setting the trap over the hole I like a cinder block on top of cage traps when I have to use them when using a cage trap it don't hurt to dig up underneath the trap and kina "blend" the wire floor into the dirt I have also built a small wire box and hog ringed it to the trigger.

I kept using tuna/sardine cans(fresh ones of.course) but to no avail. It would come take the can out lick it clean and go. The one night I forgot to bait it was the night the coon got trapped. Go figure. I guess the oils had dripped into the trap.

Chicken guts, and left overs from processing has been the best bait for many predators ( skunk, coon, possum). Stinky dry cat food has been 2nd (coon, possum, cat).

Always had very good luck with Sardines. I use them on my trap line too not just for problems around my coops. I also use a combination of fish oil and shellfish oil.

Well the varmint/whatever it was got in the trap last night and ate the bread. But didn't trigger the trap. Will have to work on that. So he has to step on the trap to get the bread. But at least now i know what he wants.

When we have a hard to catch/trap coon, we string big marshmallows on fishing line and tie them up in the trap. Then they have to work at getting them and spring the trap closed. Otherwise, they usually are smart enough to just reach in and get the bait without getting trapped.

I like to use peanut butter sandwiches and marshmallows... I alway put the food at the back of the trap so it has to go in as far as possible, with that being said I also cover the trap with an old blanket so it has to go into the trap to get the food... I also usually break the sandwich into pieces and put a few by the door of the trap to get him in the right direction... the blanket is key I think but just be careful that you don't have a skunk in the trap before picking it up/removing the blanket.

We zip lock an empty sardine can in the middle of the trap and add peanut butter. Works every time. We quit using sardines or other smelly meats because our tom cat doesn't mind spending the night in the trap if we are providing tasty treats.
