Treating for cocci - what should I expect?

I'm treating an 8 week old barred rock hen for cocci. It started with ver red bloody stool. The vet has me giving her Albon orally via syringe for 10 days. I have 2 more doses to give her.

My question is should the stool look perfectly normal by now? It generally looks normal, but she has what looks like intestinal lining in her stool, but it's every morning, so I'm not sure if it's that or blood. (We'll be taking a fecal sample in after treatment.) Other than that she's active, eating, drinking and acting normal. I'm just worried the Albon might not totally clear this up.

Any experience out there???? This obviously isn't an emergency, but on my mind ALL the time! Never thought I'd be so obsessive looking at chicken poo!

Thanks for any input!

I have not used Sulfa drugs for coccidiosis, and I can't remember what the charts say for treatment with that.

When using the Amprolium, which is a thiamine (B vitamin) blocker, you can expect to see clearing of symptoms by Day 3. I would continue treating to at least Day 5.

Hope that limited info helps. Please keep us posted. Good luck!

Ed. to add - - looked up the Albon. It's a sulfa drug. Sorry, I have not used those yet! They may show similar signs, though. Perhaps someone else has more to add.

it is very necessary with coccidiosis to treat full time they tell you

WITH THAT SAID
here is what you could have been doing from day one of medication

the medication some times causes bleeding
and the stress from that is hard on the bird

so do give the bird or birds this
wet mash with Vit's

3 tbsp of dry feed crumbles
4-1/2 tbsp of milk any kind
1 tbsp of yoguart
1 tbsp of applesauce
mix with vit's and add apple sauce on top of mix

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICK FED
and add 1- 1000 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each chick fed this wet mash
1 vit B complex crush and add to mix
and 1 seliunium tablet crushed for each chick fed this wet mash
putting it in the wet mash

this for each chick enyour treating
so for each chick use 2 tsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E
and 1 sleinium tablet crushed in the wet mash probiotic
1 Vit B complex crush pill and add to the wet mash also
twice a day for them till the manure is solid

Feed what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week

then quit the Vit E and selinium and Vit B complex
make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

if not medicating the birds use
Apple cider binegar in waterers
do not use ACV with medication

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week

the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem

email me any questions so you are not confused

Excellent. We're on day 8. I've been feeding probiotic yogurt every evening and take the dish out after about 1/2 hour.

I'll start on the twice a day mash as soon as I can get the Vit E and Selium. Should I continue this after treatment for awhile as well?

Thank you!

YES FOR A FULL WEEK FOR TWICE A DAY
AND THEN TAKE AWAY THE VIT'S AND JUST FEED THE WET MASH PROBIOTIC ONCE A WEEK

this should do the trick

I was wondering why the vet figured it needed such severe treatment
and not just corid or sulmet
did he/she say?
email me any questionsS

Thanks, Glenda. As this saga continues, I'll probably email you.

The vet is an avian specialist who treats only birds that includes backyard poultry. My 8 week old was new to me and I caught it the 2nd day I had her. The case seemed severe. She said she had several strains of cocci. That would be my guess as to the meds.
