Treating hookworms

400

When I just want out a few minutes ago I found 2 stools like this that look very much like blood. This is day 3 of Corid and it seems as though my silkie's are having some looser stool as well now. I am going to call my vet's office and see when a specific vet is there so I can bring another sample in to have checked. I don't know if it was a vet tech or a newer vet that checked the second sample I took in so I don't know if their diagnosis was correct.

Both poops are obviously not normal. Probably a good idea to talk to the vet. Email both of your pictures and these enlargements to them.

After speaking with my vet's office I am feeling very discouraged. He feels since coccidia was found in the first stool samples that that is what I am dealing with again and it may just continue to reappear. I asked about what I have read that usually the animal will recover with treatment and be resistant to that particular strain and he says sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn't. I am wishing I had never purchased these sizzles from this supposed breeder. I know things can happen to anyone with chickens but her facility was obviously overcrowded and it just had to be down pouring the day I picked them up so there was no poop to be seen....they were all sitting outside covered partly by a tarp. I feel like I have sentenced my poor silkie's to death.

Do you have Corid liquid or powder?

-Kathy

Try not to feel too discouraged, there are still some things you can try, like an oral drench of Corid. That's why I asked if you have the powder or the liquid.

I have the powder because that is all TSC had when I went to buy it.

Quote: That's fine... you could mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 10ml (2 teaspoons) water, stir well and give 0.074 ml per 100 grams orally for 1-3 days. Okay to do this and give medicated water. The dose you should be using in the waterer is 1.5 teaspoons per gallon for 5 days. In your case I might think about doing it for 7 days. Then reduce dose to 1/3 teaspoon for 7-14 days. In AU I think people do 5 days at 1.5 teaspoons, 7 days at 3/4 teaspoon and 7 days at 1/3 teaspoon, so that's also something worth thinking about.

Can you get a kitchen scale and get a baseline weight on all of them?

We may have a kitchen scale somewhere. I am doing the 1 1/2 tsp per gallon of water and changing it daily. I am also looking into Kocci Free. There are a few reviews on Amazon from chicken people that seem promising. Do you have any info on this?
