Treating sick turkeys - Warning, contains necropsy pictures!

Thank you for the pictures. I will use them to compare our bird. And the poop looks very familiar.
It seems that more birds have it.

So I have to give them all the Metronidazole and the api general cure right?
How many do you have?

-Kathy

They all need to be de-wormed ASAP with Safeguard liquid for goats or Safeguard Paste for horses, Dose to treat the cecal worm is 0.23ml per pound and repeat in ten days. If any ot the other look sick you should treat them with metronidazole, whicj is sold as:

Meditrich - 100mg tablets
Fish-Zole - 250mg tablets
Aqua-zole - 250mg tablets
Flagyl - 250mg tablets
API General Cure powder - 250mg (plus 75mg praziquantel)

The first four listed are tablets and easier to give, so that's what I think you should buy. If others look sick, get the powder. Powder is very expensive and hard to give, so don't get it unless you have other that look sick. Make sense?

-Kathy

ok sorry I just want to make sure i got it right
so
0.23ml per pound for the safeguard.

And how much of the API General Cure powder per pound?
or how many mg of metronidazloe per pound?

It looks like we have more than one bird sick so I will go with the powder form.

Thanks again for your help . Its much appreciated

Yes, 0.23ml per pound. My full grown male peacocks get 3ml, hens get 2ml and my six month old just got 1.5ml. My adult broad breasted white turkey hens get 7.5ml.

API General Cure is metronidazole.
It looks like this:

How much do your turkeys and peafowl weigh? I give about 25 mg per pound for five days.

-Kathy

I just got back from buying everything.
I will have to go out and weight them now. but Apart of our white lady turkey they should all be around only 1.5 to 2.0 kg.
Do you add water to the API general cure before giving it? And do you give it by syringe?

How old are they? All of my peas from 2014 weigh close to 3kg.

-Kathy

Sorry I was mistaken I just weighted them.

The turkeys are 1 year old and 12lb so around 5kg.
I haven't weighted the peas yet.

And I just have to give the safeguard orally, right?
so for my 12lb turkey that would be ~2.7ml

Yes, a 12 pound turkey would get at least 2.7ml. To make it easy, I would just give mine 3ml. FYI, this is the amount that my vet recommended that I give to treat the cecal worm and it's the amount I've been giving since 2012. Ignore the directions on the bottle, they're for goats, and goats get 1/10 the amount per pound.

This is what she showed me and she pointed to the 50mg/kg.
