Treating Tapeworms - Under Construction

Hi! I know this is an old thread, but I am hoping someone can give me advice.

I got a fecal test done for both my chickens and ducks and they came back positive for tapeworm (and I saw tapeworm in my duck’s pool).

I already treated the chickens with Equimax paste, but am wondering if the paste is also safe for ducks? If so, is the dosing the same as chickens?

Thank you!

Fenbendazole, given for several days in a row (five? ten? don't remember) will kill a few tapeworm species, but definitely not all of them. Only praziquantel kills tapeworms effectively, and it's not on the approved list for poultry, at least in the USA.
Ask your state poultry expert, as at an ag extension office, or the state veterinary lab, if it's necessary to treat your birds at all. Some parasites in low numbers aren't worth treating, as as long as your birds free range, they will be reinfected anyway.

Actually there's no official egg withdrawal time for Ivermectin or praziquantel, or any other unapproved product. We tend to pick a number of days, or whatever, that seems reasonable, because the product will have very little still present in the eggs, probably.
This is not the same as an 'approved withdrawal time' because there isn't one for products that aren't supposed to be used at all.

Thanks, Mary! I understand that those medications aren’t approved for poultry, but I do feel comfortable using them based on years of evidence of safety. I wish I had access to a vet that would provide a prescription for an approved med! (And I wish that there were more options for poultry).

What do you use for your birds when they have tapeworm?

Equimax or Zimecterin Gold equine paste. Most use Equimax for tapeworms.
